hey guys,

Im a recently walking quad (well walking as in I can shuffle maybe 100m at a time very slowly with the help of crutches and somebody walking behind me). I know its a very short ditance but is a major achievement for me. yippeeee!

I just so delighted to get my ass out my chair and walk/shuffle again! Im going to a friends wedding next week and my boyfriend is against me going walking on cruthes. He thinks it will be a long day, lots of walking involved and I may regret not taking my chair.

What do you think I should do? My worse nightmare would be that I would have to be lifted and carried around the wedding reception. But on the other hand a dress looks so much prettier and normal standing. He has told me that he will always help and assist my walking but Im just imagining him with a few beers.....................

Brave walking or sit sulking for the day??? I hate being in action photos in my chair

PLease help

xxx

Is it possible to walk but take your chair with you so that if you do get too tired you could then get the chair for a rest? Just an idea.

That is what I would suggest as well, if it makes you feel better, just leave the chair in the car out of the view of everyone in case you don't need it and you can shine brightly in your newfound mobility! But being prepared for possibly overdoing is wise... your boyfriend is right to be concerned that you will become tired and may overdo, so a backup plan is always wise.

How long does it take you to shuffle that 100m? And how tired are you at the end?

Consider how many times you might have to make that same effort during the day.

Take the chair with you. I bet you're going to need it!

Takes me about 10-12 minutes to walk 100m approx.......... my boyfriend walks behind to catch me if I fall.... Just so looking foward to showing off my new mobility! for once I wont be the girl in the wheelchair!

Would really like to leave my chair behind!

I too would take the chair and leave it in the car - then if you need it, it is there for you. I think that it might be too much. You can always get out of the chair for pictures/dancing/small walks if you decide to use it.

Good luck, have fun :D

I think you should always have a backup plan - so take the chair, leave it in the car. Just knowing it's there will ease your mind and your boyfriend's so you can enjoy the event.

Also, can you confide in a couple of friends and and let them know your dilemma? Tell them to get as many pictures of you out of the chair as possible, in case you have to go to Plan "B". Besides, if you're like me you look MUCH better earlier in the evening, before the open bar gets you!

I hope you have a wonderful time!

Looks like it's pretty unanimous that you should take the chair just in case. And look at it this way.......your BF was looking out for what is in YOUR best interest for keeping you pain-free/not overly tired & therefore able to enjoy your friend's wedding. Pretty sure that your friend would rather you enjoy the wedding than being exhausted & miserable. I'm from the U.S. so I don't know how close 100m is to 50-100ft, but I do know that the effort it requires for me to cover that distance takes a LOT out of me to accomplish. So if you can dance as a quadruped vs. quad in a chair you're doing pretty darn good. :D (<----- ha ha ha I've been wondering when a chance to use this one would be. ).

Best of luck to your friend & their new life.

This is such a personal choice.

You could just make everyone so worried that your gonna fall that the Bride gets jealous with the attention.

Personally I would wheel and save my shuffle for the slow dances :D

Look, you know your abilities. Your working hard at the progress you've made and it will eventually get even stronger, but your still in the beginning stages. You've got nothing to prove to anyone that hasn't already been shown.

I say, go sans chair for the pictures. Then, save your energy and enjoy yourself at the reception. You can certainly get a bit more tipsy in the chair! :wink05:

I completely agree! While I think it's great that you are progressing and walking and you would like to show off your new mobility... it's not your day to "shine" sorry if that comes off harsh!

Take your chair, take pictures without a chair, save your strength for the rest of the night. Let the bride have her 15 seconds of fame :mfromg:

I have to go along with TB on this one. It's the bride's day,, not yours. It would be a shame to have her wedding day remembered for the day the crip fell on her arse.

I applaud your achievements and hope you get stronger and reach all your goals,,, but for your friend's day,, couldn't standing for pictures with her, and as many slow dances as you have in you, be enough?

My best wishes to you,, and the bride.
