Yes it sounds nasty doesn't it, i may have to have this procedure and would like to know if anyone else has had the operation done before?

The operation is for prolapse and hemorrhoids, which have slowly gotten worse over the years from doing manual evaculation for bowel therapy.

I have been told by the surgeon that i can't insert anything, fingers included for up to 21 days. So i have no idea how i am supposed to do my bowel therapy.

Anyone had this op done?

Taking stool softeners or psyllium may relieved constipation and the the straining that accompanies it.But in your case with SCI,i hope before or after the operation doctor should discussed you about the bowel protocol in your case.Because manual evacuation and supposotory is the only way that you can pass stool.So...why the doctor did'nt give an advice for that?

Try to do a warm sitz bath for 10 to 15 minutes after each bowel movement eases discomfort and wich promote healing.

The only thing the doctor has said to me is that i can't insert anything for up to 21days and that laxatives is my only option. The nurses mentioned that the usual after treatment is salt baths but how does a para sit in a bath?? Out of the question for me so i think the recovery from this is going to be hell. The surgery is in a couple of days and i'm still thinking of pulling the pin on it. Better the devil you know.

Hi TE50,

warm sitz bath can do on the next sink or wash bowl?(dunno what can you call that) The bowl next to the toilet bowl,that using for the sitz bath.Even you are para,can sit in there.Just put a support beside or in front of you like a bar that you can hold it immedietly just in case you will lean forward or sideward.Or using a commode that has a plastic bin or basin underneath,you can fill it with warm water with salt.I hope the nurses can provide or improvised the things that you'll need after the operation.

About the operation,they're are not allowed you to insert anything up to 21 days.I think they should put you on special diet.Or give a nutritional drink after the operation.So that it will not affect your bowel movement or at least will diminish the intestine to produce a stool.I hope they will do also the alternative way for the bowel problem.It sound so difficult after the operation,do'nt hessitate to ask some more info regarding to this.Because after the operation...nurses and doctors will not be suffer the pain....only you.So ask them about the query that cling in your mind.

I hope you,they'll gonna comfort you after the operation.
If I were your nurse...I can do improvised basin for you.....

I realise this is an old post but it saves me starting a new one.

Has anyone had this procedure done yet? I'm on the waiting list but our local Hospital has no funds at present.
I'm now very appehensive because the Consultant in my case didn't say anything about not being able to do bowels for 3 weeks.

I take laxatives as a matter of course now because otherwise I end up bleeding so badly PR that I almost pass out. Being iron deficient anaemic doesn't help either.

I had begun to develop bleeding hemorrhoids over a year ago and because I take blood thinners (from developing bilateral DVT's) the situation became serious. I had been bleeding daily for a few weeks and resulted in me passing out for 20 mins.(thankfully I managed to transfer to my bed before doing so). I was admitted to hospital for a transfusion a couple hours later when my tests showed my blood counts left me basically "half full". I was sent to a rectal surgeon for follow up and he did a "banding" procedure and told me to come back for surgery if they reappeared. They did but I was reluctant to have surgery so I consulted with a naturopathic physician and discovered the kesey treatment.

It was simple and painless and took all of 5 mins for each treatment (I had 5 or 6 total). Basically you lie on your side and a double pronged rod is inserted into the rectum where it sends electrical current to the inflammed tissue thus shrinking it. I haven't bled since (knock on wood) and I avoided an expensive surgery that would have required me to need another transfusion because I'm on the coumadin. AB people who have this done come in on their lunch breaks and go right back to work w/out any pain or discomfort.

If there is any such treatment available in your area I would highly recommend looking into it. My insurance does not cover naturopathic procedures so I had to pay out of pocket but to me it was well invested.

PS> I have also really changed my diet to include a LOT of fiber and lots of water and it's made such a difference. It's nice not to worry anymore.
