my boyfriend has to see a doctor to see if he needs back surgury. can someone tell me what this means? i hope he does not have to have surgury.

LUMBAR; THERE IS A TRANSITIONAL TYPE LUMBOSACRAL VERTEBRAL BODY WHICH FOR PURPOSES OF THIS EXAMINATION WILL BE LABELED S1 WITH DISC DESICCATION AND DEGENERATION OF L5-S1 . THE CONUS IS NORMAL IN SIGNAL AND TERMINATES AT NORMAL LEVEL . DISCS OTHER WISE MAINTAIN THEIR NORMAL HEIGHT AND SIGNAL . DEGENERATIVE ENDPLATE CHANGES ARE NOTED AT L5-S1 . VERTEBRAL HEIGHT , ALIGNMENT AND SIGNAL INTENSITY IS OTHER WISE UNREMARKABLE. AT L5-S1 LEVEL BROADBASED DISC OSTEOPHYTE COMPLEX CAUSES MILD CANAL STENOSIS AND BILATERAL FORAMINAL NARROWING . NO OTHER LEVELS OF STENOSIS OR FORAMINAL NARROWING ARE NOTED . the doctor he sees said he was sending him for a evaluation . he may or may not need surgury. how does this sound to you?

these MRI reports can be confusing with their medical terms.

Desiccation means drying out and Osteophytic means thickening.

I worked out what my MRI report meant by using this website

http://www.nlm.nih.g...dictionary.html

Just type in the term and it will explain what it means.

Hope that helped.

Basicly, he's saying that at L5 S1, there is a little deterioration of the vertabra and only a little arthritc buildup. Beyond that he seems unwilling to say,, except that you should see someone else for evaluation.

As is usually the case,, when there is no glaring problem,, they get vague as hell.

That doesn't mean they won't decide to operate,,, if the surgeon needs to make a payment on his yacht.
