Now, although I get a good chunk of quality sleep, I wake after around 5 hours with an aching back. Of course this could just be my condition deteriorating, but if I had to make the choice now I would probably go for a combo mattress with pocketed springing sub and memory foam top layer.

I have a thin waterproof mattress cover on it. Can buy them at Sleep America, most furniture stores. The material is really thin, not plastic, so you don't end up soaked in sweat (found the plastic ones get hot!).

They are very expensive though. We bought the floor model and got 50% off. But now that I've had it...I know it is worth the money.

When it's raining & I'm hurting like there's no tomorrow if someone got in bed with me if they didn't move ever so gingerly it'd kill me......not on the temperpedic!

The pressure mapping went fairly well, even though my pelvis is extremely bony.the mattress with the best pressure relief wasn't available in the size that I wanted (king-size) for an adjustable bed. Like MeadowlarkMark, I also had a really hard time moving around on the mattress.

I have been using a roho mattress for 10 years, constantly having to air it up and worry about air leaks. Not to mention I have a queen size bed and the other side is a hard foam mat like kids use for nap time. Not too comfortable for my guest of honor

As a nifty bonus, you can get a prescription for the tempur-pedic bed from your GP and not have to pay tax...

Yup. I did. Was really easy. Called the GP, asked her to write the scrip for the tempur-pedic for back pain, took it with me to purchase the bed, and the Mattress Firm guys put it into their computer and didn't charge tax. Apparently, the tempur-pedic is seen as a medical supply when a scrip is present. From what my GP told me, other mattresses don't qualify.

I've found you can buy unbranded memory foam of the same quality even cheaper. I bought several bits from eBay for various projects, including a topper for a single bed. I do have a 10" Tempur mattress for comparison. I can't detect any difference in the foam - except for the price. The topper does make moving around easier because of the firmness of the under mattress.

Don't be cheap. You spend 1/3rd of your life in the piece of furniture we call our beds.. Buy the real Tempurpedic for the quality and warranty. There is a difference in elasticity and pressure relieving quality in the generic memory foam. $2,000 is cheap when you consider the benefits. Hell people spend that much on a TV but we all try to buy inexpensive mattresses. Go with proven quality. It is an investment in your health. The basic 8" tempurpedic mattress is all you need, Don't fall for the fancy extra upgrades just get the Classic, or basic and put it on a platform. I have a 8 inch king-sized Tempurpedic mattress and it has improved my life. It really did reduce my night spasms and decreased my waking pain. You can even sleep on one side all night if you like. Spare no expense. I have my first pressure sore after 29 year in a chair, and it is a pain in the ass. My sore is on my right bun and was caused by my chair--not my bed--but I hate the down-time. Take care of yourself. You won't regret buying a classic Tempurpedic brand mattress. Just don't buy their "Hollywood" or "Celebrity" or other style mattresses--go with the Original, Basic or whathever they call the one with 4 inches of tempur and 4 inches of support foam.
It is a firm mattress but it conforms to feel soft. I feel luxuriant in mine and its great for sex--especially if you have a partner. LOL
I'm outta here..

I think.
Bout 10 years ago (way before my injury) I moved into a new apartment and knew I was gonna need a new mattress.
I had a chat with an old friend of mine and asked where I could get one on the cheap.
"Bone-head!" he sez, "a third of your life is spent in bed!" (even more for me, being both incredibly charming and a sexual athlete.) "yer a dope dealer, spend some money on a bed. Make it a nice experience."
Now that I'm injured, the VA helps me financially. They got me a Tempu-med. No pressure wounds as of yet and Paco, my lil' Cuban cabana boy is just plain delighted. (he can bang the maid and I sleep right through it!)
Let's get this one right!

I'd think it would be impossible to dress yourself or even just roll over easily on these mattresses.
Give me a nice firm mattress any day. I can roll over and dress easily. When I'm traveling and the hotel has a soft mattress it's really tough getting dressed in the morning.
