I use them.
They are made by Hollister.
They are prelubed.
They look like this

They are convenient because they come in a sterile pack that includes a set of gloves, Benzo swabs, and a towel in one small package that can be put in a backpack.

I use B Braun Actreen Glys Set (the 'set' part means there is a bag to hold the urine).
Its pre-lubed and comes in a variety of sizes and tips, I use Tiemann tip size 12 and I'd recommend the B Braun as they are very simple to use, just remove the packaging, unsheath the tube and insert, then empty the bag when your done and throw it in the bin. The company provides wipes, cloths and disposable waste bags with every order and your insurance/health care provider should be able to get any intermittent catheter for you. Its up to you to choose. Talk to your doc or continence advisor aswell, they can get you samples from various companies.
Here is some info on the one I use:

LoFric Hydro-Kit II Male, 40 cm, comes in a sealed bag with sterile water so no need to touch the cath.
I get 100 kits every 4 weeks, no charge to me. Damned socialised medicine I should be free to re use an old cath for year and get regular UTI's

I tried one of these in hospital- found the tube very stiff and the little plastic bit to hold it kept slipping and I couldn't insert. Does it just take some practice or was I doing something wrong?

It does take a bit of getting used to, also if you keep them at room temperature the tube isnt so stiff.
I am guessing you are pretty new to all this so you do get used to them after a while. I do always have spares as I have dropped one or two!
