Hi everyone,

I am after a little bit of advice. I lost a close friend in a climbing accident recently. Climbing was his passion and his mom would like to donate money to something climbing related. As he was a physio student we thought something that offered rehab to climbers or extreme sports people in general would be a good idea. Does anyone know if anything like this exists in the UK? Or maybe something that gives wheelchair users the chance to get back to/ take up these sports, climbing especially? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much

Lan

Lan,

Where are you based? Not sure about climbing specific charities, but in the UK Back Up is very good for getting spinally-injured up and about again.

Lan,
I think thats an excellent idea you have. If you say where you are from then you may get appropriate advice, everythings different country to country. As Ralph said in the uk there is Back Up Trust, maybe worth a look and perhaps contact them for some ideas and advice. http://www.backuptrust.org.uk/
Good Luck!

Thank you I have added Back up to the list I am compiling for Steve's mom to choose from. We are in the UK, Steve grew up in Gloucester and studied in Bristol so South West preferably but any UK based charity would be good.

Thanks

How about Standing Start?
Standing Start is the leading rehabilitation centre for spinal cord injuries in the UK and through active exercise has already made a huge difference to a wide range of Clients. But the work at Standing Start has an important psychological benefit too. After an injury you are repeatedly told all the things you can't do but we want to find and develop what you can do. When you find those things, small or large, you finally find you are fighting back against your condition - hence our motto Hope Believe Achieve. As a result of our Programme many individuals have returned to work, taken up new sports and hobbies, had the confidence in their independence, many of these things they have been told they can't do. It can be something small like feeding and dressing yourself through to going back to College on your own. When you see impact of these improvements on the faces of our Clients you know it is all worth while. We deal with hope and positivity, not despair.
Every single penny raised either buys equipment or provides direct financial help to undertake the programme
