Found a previous post I made back at the time of Alan's accident. He is DEFINITELY C3/4 COMPLETE. Was ventilated but not now. Is breathing and talking on his own. He has very limited movement of the fingers and the docs have told us that this movement will be worked on to allow him to operate a wheelchair.

The driving issue - posted earlier - came about because of someone who visited him. Naturally, Alan got a bit excited. Let's face it. He is only 16 and has not yet grasped that he will NEVER be able to do a lot of things either independently or with assistance.

I'm afraid folks you will just have to bear with us. This is a lot for us to take in as a family and from my own situation - more than I can deal with although I do try to answer his questions and keep his morale boosted.

I am afraid that deep in my heart I know he will never drive but I cannot tell him that. He thinks that with therapy he can improve and I cannot find it in my heart to tell him the truth.

So, if I ask stupid questions then it is because as a para I do not fully understand "life as a quad." Yes, there are times when they can live full and active lives but I am afraid that will not happen with Alan. Life is going to be very diffiuclt and full of potholes for him.

Anway, now that is off my chest I feel better.

Its no problem Alan, just think you've been misinformed. Think his neurological damage is not c3/4 is slightly lower. Its only natural that as a para you dont know these things, I dont think of things that affect paras, its no different! Simon

Hi Gary,

Feels funny talking to you over here. I'm C-6, -7 and have no finger-muscle movement at all. Does Alan have any wrist movement?

Mornin Coach

You're right this is funny! I sometimes "float" when I have nothing better to do. Alan has no wrist movement and the movement in his hands is not really very much. However, the doctors are telling us it is still early days in his therapy. So who knows what may come back. If that means they got his break wrong then sorry for misleading everyone. I can only tell what the docs are saying. HOwever, I do believe it is not an EXACT SCIENCE in determining where a break is. As I keep getting told no two people are the same. 2 folk with the same injury can have different capabilities. However, no matter, at the end of the day Alan is not going to make a miraculous recovery.

Aw the best.

Hi Gary,

I was looking around the net and came accross the following: http://streamed.wire...ressButtons=yes

I thought it may be of interest to you with regards to Alan and his options for controlling a computer.

Regards

Simon.

Cheers for that. I admit it is pretty dismal for Alan but I think reality is slowly beginning to hit him. So, we are looking at ways to assist. I shall pass it on to his Dad.

Watching film as I type, good find Simon. Strange the mothsticks aren't moulded to teeth they're really hard to use as they're shown. I can type pretty quickly and is why I haven't switched to voice rec as it seems slow compared to my mouthstick! Have to say I'm not patient enough with it though, lots of swearing :ranting:
If the progress continues a little he may be able to type with sticks into hand straps too.
