Does anyone have any experience being on Hiprex to control UTIs? My BF has been hospitalized recently 3 times - being treated for UTIs and an infection Pressure Sore......his urologist wants to put him on Hiprex now that he is done with the antibiotics, but he is frequently nauseous, and I am worried about the side effects.....he has tried the silver cath to help reduce infections, and we are also trying to work through this with dietary changes as well. Any feedback on the use of this drug would be appreciated.....

I was on it for a while with vitamin C. I got severe diarrhoea which is not the best with a colostomy, this may have been because of the vitamin C though. It is a huge and bitter pill so if his level is really high he may find it hard to swallow it perhaps. In the end I came off it as the diarrhoea was affecting my ability to work and I didn't find it really got rid of infections, just suppressed them a bit. Recently I have been having some nerve problems caused by Noroxin so have stopped taking that. Unfortunately all antibiotics have side effects - it just depends if those side effects are something the patient is something they feel they can live with or not.

Thanks....he's had some issues with his bowels as well lately....he's a C6/7....the biggest thing is that the efficacy rate is so low that it may not be worth the risk. I just don't want him to keep bouncing in and out of the hospital....actually I am going to get him re-evaluated at the local university hospital...I am not happy with the care he is getting at the hospital he is used to. He went in with a fever and UTI and came out with a pressure sore that they then misdiagnosed to be a skin absyss. So now he's bedridden trying to get the pressure sore resolved. When he does go in the hospital with infections, the staff at this supposedly great hospital are so incompetent that I find him not positioned properly, so that new sores could develop unless I'm there to check everything. (He's partially blind due to internal bleeding after the accident). I'm just trying to get a handle on all of this. Thanks again for the feedback.

Hi I haven't heard of it. Sorry to hear of all the problems you've been having. I was in hospital recently with a UTI (first time since my injury) ended up on IV antibiotics for 2 weeks..i hate the things ...but had taken 3 lots of oral antibiotics with no effect. Any way, 2 weeks after all this..urine was really smelly and i was leaking a wee bit..so remembered a natural antibiotic I used to take years ago....it's called Colloidal Silver..I now take it twice a day..and so far no more problems......xx

Hi Suzin,
This is how I handle my guys with Frequent UTIs
First try to find the organism causing the problem, once you get on top of it with the right A/B, you need to:
Increase fluids up to 3Litres/4 pints
Fix up bowels
The silver Catheters are the best (Bardex IC) for guys prone to UTIs I change the Cath every 4 weeks
Change the sterile leg weekly, use link system with the night bag.
Take Cranberry Capsules (The once a day ones)
I only tend to use Hiprex for people with "sludgy/gritty urine" who block frequently, thats not to say that its still a good drug.
Also good hygiene around catheters is very important, wear gloves/swab around when emptying bags with Methylated spirits/alcohol swabs.
Hope some of this helps

Regards

Jasperb,

Are the bardex silver ICs available for females?
Look! It's a snail! It's a sloth! Able to creep short distances before lunch!

Hi. As far as I can see the two types of Infection control catheters we have in this country (Argyle & Bardex IC) only come in male lengths.

Thanks for all of the advice....we are consulting with another urologist, looking for one that specializes in working with SCI's is not easy.....he has a Supra....whatever...tube that goes right into the bladder...is the silver Cath still good for that type of pegged in tube? I am going to get the Cranberry capsules tomorrow....we moniter his fluid intake and he is doing well there. He is using the collodial silver again, and it seems to help a bit...but we are on the edge of another hospital stay and he's getting a bit depressed by the recurrent admissions. We're thinking of going to Cleveland Clinic in the spring for a consult to see about how to change his care to help minimize all of the complications.....I know infection is his biggest risk, and I just want to make sure his care is the best it can be.

Thanks again for the advice!

For what it is worth, I have been having a little success with fighting infection recently by taking Olive Leaf Extract. Can't guarantee it but it does make me feel a lot better and seems to hold the infections off a bit.
