Hello All :(

My boyfriend is a C5 incomplete quadriplegic. He LOVES video games but there are so few out there for him to play. He's paralyzed from his chest down including his fingers, but he has use of his arms. He uses a brace with a pencil attached to play the games he does have, but I was wondering if any of you out there could suggest some games I could buy him for Christmas that he'd be able to play. Maybe you know of some sort of adaptive equipment he could use to play PC games or even Console games...? I'd appreciate any help/advice you could give.

Thank you,
Stephanie

I am essentially in the same boat, my injury is C4-C5 incomplete and play video games on PC and PS2. Like your boyfriend I have my arms but no fingers. I would love to give some advice/help.

What type of games does he like?

You can message me if you want.

his preferable type of game would help, i'm a c 5/6 complete & here's what i play:

What consoles does he have?

For the PC:

Shooting:

Battlefield & Call of Duty, there are a ton of these, controls are pretty tough, use a bunch of keyboard & mouse combo, depends on his arm control, they're pretty tough games but can be a lot of fun

Adventure Style:

Syberia 1 & 2, great adventure/puzzle game but not as intense as Myst & you don't have to take in depth notes, it's a couple years old but a good one, plus you'll be able to find it cheap

The Longest Journey, pretty much the same as the Syberia games

both have easy mouse & keyboard control

Simulation:

I played the Sims for awhile but haven't tried the Sims 3, it's a never ending game & it can easily take hrs. from your day, again basic mouse & keyboard control

Flight Sim X by Microsoft, you'll need a joystick to make this game fun so it can get expensive

Racing:

Colin McRae 2005 & Dirt 1 & 2, uses the keyboard & can get pretty tough, just depends on how much control of his arms he has, but it's possible

TrackMania, there's a free & pay version, controls are the same as the above racing games

Sports:

Tiger Woods golf, it's the only sport game i play on the pc

Strategy:

Rise of Nations, there's newer games out like Dawn of Discovery or Empire: Total War but i haven't played them, use a lot of mouse control

hope this helps some

I am a c-5-6 with the same limmitations but find my game of choise is World of Warcraft....the game is HUGE and played online with real people, so not only are you playing against the game but real life people as well. There are litteraly 100's of things to do and always someone on at the same time. Although it is highly addictive.....and cost like $15.00 a month to play I find it well worth it. As far as what he needs to play is just his pencil and I use a Kensington 4 button trackball mouse and I do very well....I couldn't play without the mouse... At first its hard but after learning the game it becomes a lot of fun.... He can try it free for 10 days without buying anything and I would be more then happy to help him or anyone that wants to come try it out. Just send me a message and I can help set you up and help you learn the game.

I totally agree with Doug.

I think the MMORPG idea is fantastic, and there are quite a few out there right now, with similiar interfaces to WoW, that could be a realistic choice for a timesink. The button combos are very simple and I think could be a realistic choice for someone who uses a computer via input stick.

Plus, it's always a nice idea to build a character who represents yourself to be the strongest in the land, especially when it's a bit different in real life, haha.
There is no winner. You just give up, or keep trying.
