Hi! I've lurked on and off here the past few years, so I finally decided to join when a parent on a pregnancy forum reminded me this site had a Parents in Wheelchairs board!!! I'd never been here til now since it wasn't necessary.

My injury was at C2 (incomplete) in '01 and I'm also living with mitochondrial myopathy (energy metabolism disorder classified under muscular dystrophies). a lot of my symptoms are hard to sort out by what was triggered by SCI vs Mito since my injury worsened my mito.

But, I'm currently 10 weeks pregnant with my first baby and trying to figure out this whole wheelchair parenting thing. :]
Any advice would be MUCH appreciated!

I have an insurance hearing tomorrow to appeal a new chair denial. I really need a chair sized appropriately. I'm using someone elses (mine broke) and its 4" too short and now my hips spread making it too small in the hips. my chair is broken. I'm crossing my fingers that they will be nice about it.

Congratulations on your pregnancy.
Some of the newborn products that have worked well for me are:
- A bassinet on wheels (so you can take it to the living room and set the baby down to transfer.
- The swing I bought is sort of tricky to put the baby in. I can't roll up real close because of the floor bar and the swing is pretty low. I'd look for one that doesn't have a bar across the front and is a little higher.
- Baby slings so you can wheel around while holding the baby. I got a really neat one on ebay at essiedesigns.

I'm sure you'll be a great mom. I wish you the best.

Congrats on your pregnancy! I am sure you are excited, as well as a little nervous, I know I was! I am a mother of three, and have been in a wheelchair since well before the birth of my first. My experiences have lead me to start a website for parents that are in wheelchairs. www.momsonwheels.net I hope you will find this site helpful to you. Good luck to you and I hope you got approved for a new chair=)
