I'm looking for feedback on pros and cons of the Disney World Parks and their onsite accommodations.
I have been to WDW a dozen times with my children and now would love to take my bf.
Has anyone stayed on Disney property?
If not what other hotels would you recommend?
I know the onsite hotels all provide accessible transportation to all of the parks, but what about transportation from the airport to WDW or another hotel?

Thanks in advance for any advice!
Debbie

I visit Disney World once or twice a year. It's the most accesible vacation spot I've ever been to.

I usually stay on property. The hotels are great, they have roll in shower rooms that work wonderfully for me, the buses all have lifts/ramps and the staff is fantastic. If you decide to stay on-site make sure you book the trip yourself and not through a travel agent. When you call to make the reservation make sure you explain your needs. They reservationist should put you on hold while they talk to special services and they will block that room for you when you make your reservation.

Here's a great website that does a good job of explaining various access inside the parks:

Have a great trip!

Thanks so much Bill! What an awesome site. I love how it tells you exactly what rides are accessible, where to get on, and everything!

I was there last weekend and could not believe how easy it wasto get around and get on the rides. I stayed at Coronado springs on disney property. bathrooms were very accessible, shuttle bus to parks very easy to get on the drivers were helpful as well. Any disney property resort is worth staying at even if its a little more $$. free parking and convience is worth it.
I ecven went to first aide to ly down in disney to use restroom and they were helpful and the RN worked at shepards center in sci dept.
It was my first trip since my accident 6 months ago and could not have asked for a better expierence plus did not have to wait in most lines!!

try tower of terror at mgm what a feeling for a quad!!

hope this helps

Thanks so much Eric. It is so awesome to see how they are adapting the rides to make more and more things accessible. My bf went about 12yrs ago and hardly went on any rides. I am determined to make this trip much more enjoyable for him.

Thanks again,
Debbie

I am c5 c6 and went 6 months after my accident. many rides he can wheel his chair right on and others he has to transfer, which is very easy to do. they are very accomidating at disney but dont think you will skip all the lines many rides you have to wait in line. very dissapointing.
their is even a nurse in the clinic there that worked at shepards center, she was really nice and let me use a bed to lay down in.(difficult for me to pee in my chair...lol)

you will have a great time but dress warm it snowed in orlando this past weekend and its in the 30's now.

I have been to Disney four times since my accident in 2006 and going again in March...it is not only the most happiest place on earth, it's also the most accessible! :D

You can get to the front of the queue if you stay on-site at a Disney Resort. With a complimentary "FastPass" you get a ticket for whatever rides you want to go on early in the day and then come back at your assigned time. It really is the best way to fit in as much as you can without long waits. FastPass is available to anyone who stays at a Disney Resort and is complimentary, the only downfall is you need to get to these rides to get the FastPass and then come back at your assigned time.

Universal has a simular program, you pay for it, and it almost doubles your admission costs however you get to the front of the line whenever you want, you don't have to "plan" your day.

Orlando is the most accessible place on earth - I am looking to buy a winter home there just to escape the cold and snowy Canadian winters! (while the prices are so cheap!)

Jeff,

I just want to clarify FastPass a bit. It is free to all ticket holders at Walt Disney World you don't have to be staying at a Disney Hotel to use it. As long as you have a valid ticket you can use it in the FastPass machine.

Universal Studios does give free access to the front of the line for people staying at the Universal Resort Hotels or you can pay extra to have this perk.

I have been there several times, but I was mostly wondering about where to stay.

Did you stay on site? I know the bus system is all accessible but I wasn't sure how good the on site hotels were as far as accessibility is concerned. We usually stay at a value resort.

I went to Disney last year and found The PASSPORTERS OpenMouse For Walt disney very helpful. (easy access vacations for travelers with extra challenges) I used an EVC cart for the whole trip due to my back issues and fibromyalgia. I found the Disney staff to be very helpful and informative. Ps this book will also tell you if you can board in your chair or if you need to be able to transfer.
