Is Weight Loss Possible? weight loss, excercise

Obviously, the more weight you gain the more detrimental it will be to your recovery and capabilities. I’m one of the luckier ones, left with at least my upper body/arms to lift my entire body weight. However, since wheelchair bound I am clueless on how to exercise and lose weight. I lost about 10 pds in the hospital but since release in August, I am sure I’ve gained about 15
+. Right now, it’s difficult for me to wear most of my clothes, either 1) I am too big to fit in them or 2) I can’t easily dress myself in the chair due to 4 mth + loss of bladder control…I’d rather not soil my silk PJ’s if you catch me drift.
I am in psyhical therapy 1-2 times a week and I lift upper body weights about 1-2 times a week at the gym. Granted, this is all muscle building, not weight loss. And honestly, eating has been one pleasure left to enjoy. Literally, I am either laying in bed or sitting in a chair, I burn more cardio brushing my teeth. Does anyone have some insight on how they’ve managed their weight and more importantly LOST weight?

Being the gourmand that I am the very thought of reducing my caloric intake sends chills up AND down what's left of my spine.
Slices of cucumber and cottage cheese in loo of a nice Gorgonzola on a Carrs water biscuit?
I really don't think so, but thank you very much for the offer.
Tobacco will eventually have to go. The sex thing, well, we all know about that. Moonlight strolls on the beach? Sounds so romantic and looks good on paper but dad-didily-gummit, I just don't see it happening in the near future. Massive drug abuse? Done that too, kinda lost its appeal after the umpteenth over dose.
So that leaves food. And I didn't claw my way to the top of the food chain just to give up Ben and Jerry's chocolate fudge what ever ya call it.
And NOOOOOO, smaller servings ISN'T an option. Wanna see a really pissed off E-dog? Give me one doughnut, without the hope of another to back it up. Yup yup yup, a tease is far worse than total abstinence. Ask any adolescent boy with a Playboy magazine, a raging hardon and no bathroom to which he can escape.
I have resigned myself to the fact that I'm gonna be stout. Big boned. Husky. Hey, I'm just a big ol' teddy bear.
I see you live on the west coast. Perhaps we could have dinner some time. I know a lotta great places. A WHOLE LOTTA great places:wink05:
Ah well, just thought I'd ask.
E-dog / by the way, welcome to the site!
I will nevah, EVAH take a pinch from a greasy muddahf*@kah like you!
How 'bout if I spell it out for ya. D-I-L-L-I-G-A-F

Make up your mind right now whether you want to look like a beached whale.
If not, do what you have to do. Or rather, don't do what you know you mustn't.

I'm a C5/6 and have managed to shed a few pounds. It's not rocket science, cut down on the carbs, alcohol and sugars. That's basically what I did, and it worked for me. You can see my weight graph here: http://www.apparelyz...?showtopic=7131
If you start doing weights though, don't forget that you will be adding muscle weight, whilst losing fat, so may not see much change on the scales.

another good idea simon, tracking it. I have started doing that too, week by week so i can visually see what i am doing and hold myself accountable. also, other posts mentioned nixing the wine and carbs. of course, that makes terrible sense too. unfortunately, cause I LOVE my wine. Thanks and you should be v. proud of yourself, i'd love to lose 2 stone!

yeah, i am.never been a junk food or soda drinker...more wine/cheese/crackers.....and yes, i cut it off in the evenings. I have been on the bladder roller coastser for almost 5 mths. The thought at first it was a urinary tract infection, spent 2 mths on those pills then went to see a urologist, she has put me on 4 different pills w/ no avail. probably going back to urologist to get a botox injection, yes, BOTOX injected in to my bladder. The last straw. supposedly the botox 'paralyzes' (ironic heh?) the bladder, preventing it from just gushing out.

I have a cheap Shwin Aerodyne bicycle thing with the arms controls that move in sync with the petals. My dad bolted a pair of boots to the petals, and I can strap them in then use my arms to force them round and round. It feels SOOO good on my knees, but it's really tough on your arms too. So far, it's the best aerobic work out I've been able to do after the injury. After about 3 minutes I'm completely out of breath, which feels good for a change. The only problem I have is that the bike is pretty tall and someone has to pick me up to get on it and strap my feet in. My husband is still working on a way to make it low to the ground though.
Hand Cycling is good too. A friend of mine gave me his hand cycle after his surgery, and it works pretty well. I'm a T2 injury, so it's a little hard for me to sit up completely straight, which hurts my neck after a while, but for the most part it feels really good.
Rolling around on the floor is usually exercise to me. I lay on my back and hold a 10 lb weight straight up in front of me and I kind of swing myself into a sitting-up position. I don't have control of my lower abs, so it's the best excuse for a sit up I can do. It does actually exercise the lower abs, but not controlled... then they spasm all night.
Those are the best few exercise tricks I've found for myself. Everyone's different though, but it might be worth a try. Most of my weight loss wasn't due to exercise as much as what I was eating. I pretty much let myself go and eat whatever made me feel better. I started weight watchers and lost about 30 lbs over 5 months.... then I got married and 15 lbs came back.
