This problem has just become a HUGE problem for me. It was a slight problem all throughout my life in a wheel-chair.
My body temperature is now out of regulation constantly. I live in Canada, so it's really cold here. So even the slightest cold breeze sends me wimpering.
However, this problem started this year and even occured during HOT SUMMER MONTHs where suddenly I'd be freezing.
Blankets, heaters, sweaters ... I'm wrapped up in all of it. I can't get my control back.
I'm missing out on new years. I can't go outside shivering like this.
I am also EXCESSIVELY SWEATING which really does NOT help!!!! I am so sick and tired.
My doctor did a bunch of tests, she said they can't find anything wrong and this is common untreatable problem for SCI people.
My next appointment with the dr is february...
I am freezing. I am freezing! what do I do? please tell me one of oyu have as a solution.

serotonin is involved in temp regulation, so you may need an adjustment in your SSRI/SNRI
could also be a reaction to narcotics (the fentanyl patches gave me this horrible problem like what you are describing, waves of profuse sweating but still chilled to the bone and yet skin burning... I was having a bad reaction to it, and then the withdrawal didn't help)
last thing I can think of is a pressure on your brainstem
sorry about your woes -- make sure you get the doctors doing what they need to for you
don't let them dismiss you

I have had these issues too. I remember being out of town in the winter where the outside temp was below freezing and I had the AC on in the hotel room cause I was pouring sweat. I know Tramadol caused issues with this for me as well which I later found out that some people have a known negative reaction to that, wish they would have told me that when it was initially prescribed but anyways. The main trigger for me though seems to be a lack of sleep and if my allergies get really bad. I dont know why the allergies thing is an issue, maybe its AD caused by my boding having the negative reactions of allergies of the itching, swelling, etc, not sure. I take Benadryl when I feel my body temp all screwed up and if I know I am overtired then I take a few Baclofen to help me sleep.
Good luck and hope you find something that helps.

I'm sorry your suffering this way but I think there might be more underlying issues causing these symptoms.
Most SCI have some loss of temperature control. I also suffer from this, I feel the cold a lot, and find it difficult to retain my body heat. Unlike you, I can overheat in the hot spells, (we do get them in England) so I can suffer from heat stroke.
When I was young and newly injured, the cold weather never bothered me, but the older I get the worse things become. I don't let this have too great an effect on my life; I'm aware of it and take measures to adjust.
If you are shivering with cold when its hot weather then I think there may be an underlying cause, other than your " Body Thermostat" going wrong. Severe shivering or severe sweating usually means there's something wrong, but if you cant feel, then you wont know what it is.
I know its no consolation to be told that other people suffer with lack of temperature control, but at least you know you're not alone. Try some of the things others suggest, but most importantly make your Dr aware of this. If your Dr doesn't have a lot of knowledge of SCI then he could miss the obvious.
I hope 2010 is a good year for you and that you find the aswer to your problem.

If you're constantly sweating, then you may have something triggering Autonomic Dysreflexia.
First thing I'd check is your bladder, get a scan, check for bladder stones irritating the bladder wall.
Do you sweat in bed as well, if not, it could be postural when you are in your wheelchair. Get your cusion checked out, get a pressure map done. Make sure your trousers are not causing problems with seams. Check your feet, shoes etc.
Is there a pattern to the sweating?
Even mild sweating, just slight perspiration can drop your body temperature.
Just a few things to consider.
Regards
Simon.
