Hello all,

I am a T10/T11 paraplegic. I have just bought my first tens unit/ ems combo. basically it has different modes depending if u want to use it as a tens unit or as an ems. I've used tens units in the past, but never an ems. I figure from what I have read that ems would be more beneficial for atrophy and stimulating muscles as tens unit is more for pain management. anybody willing to elaborate more on this?

I have no idea what im doing when the settings are concerned. The amount of hertz, on time seconds, off time seconds. anybody familiar with this please guide me on what the settings should be. I have no idea what I'm doing.

Thanks.

I use both, but you really need a professional to give you the right settings for you, especially for areas with limited sensation. You can cause a lot of damage with these units -- everything from burns to cardiac arrhythmia and worse... Usually, the physical therapist is the one to go over this with you, so you'd be best to make an appointment with him/her.

I agree. I used one every day as part of my therapy but my pt set up the way he wanted it. They have a lot of method to their madness so you better let them so that you can get the most benefit from it.

I use EMS on my butt almost every day. I have been doing it for about 6 mos now. I had to do something as I had nothing left to sit on. I set the settings to tolerable levels that my wife (AB)could handle and went from there. You can test on a sensitive part of your body as well. I use the highest frequency and set to stim about 7 seconds and set to relax about 7 seconds. 30 minutes a day. My method has been verified as correct by my pt. I have had no burns or even redness. My muscles are starting to become a bit more responsive. It takes along time but its better than doing nothing. I am not familiar with tens or russian stim.

EMS is a muscle stimulator while TENS deals with pain.

Do a bing search for the back store. Get yourself a four channel. Use the 3" round self adhesive pads.

We had a fellow here, last year that was a very vocal advocate for electrical stimulation. He was quite taken with a particular product that he had a lot of luck with. Hopefully he will see this thread and come back with some helpful posts.

I've used neither,, but think I would like to try both,,, just have to find a way to get medicare to pay for it,

My PT got my doc to write a prescription for it, within a week I had it and insurance is paying for it.

Edit: And....it is helping me!
