i am 6 mos post injury t11, and have been using 16 pt coude tip caths until about a month ago where i couldnt pee any more, the cath would go in but i couldnt urinate, the urologist said i created a false passage and i used a leg bag for a few weeks so it could heal. when my follow up came my doc put a scope in me to see if it healed he said it did. i still have trouble with caths, they dont work all the time, but i find that i could urinate by myself if i jus push. i jus wanted to kno if i should be peeing like that or is it not good cause at times urine tends to leak. what should i do? should i keep peeing on my own, or is that not good?

i pee'd on my own for 5 yrs., they dont like u to retain anything over 100 cc's, and u can also destroy stuff by the strain i was told, but i still go on my own in the shower in the mornings alot, because i do my bowel routine everyday without the use of anything, i usually will dump my bladder in the process...........

are you on any meds? i take flomax to ensure my bladder empty's works pretty well however i have trouble urinating in my chair i actually need to be laying down. which i go every 5-6hrs and void 500cc. if you can urinate on your ownd and void completely you should then u will never worry about uti's.

I, too, have to balance between two bad options: damage from cathing and damage from pushing too hard when I urinate. I can urinate by myself but cannot empty the bladder enough.
have you tried the tapping trick, where you tap lightly near the groin, especially spots that feel very ticklish when you do it? If you have sensation, of course. I can empty about 50% normally. Then, if I am very patient, do the tapping, then push a little with my breathe when it feels like it might work. i can often empty all but about 110 c.c.s, or 3.5 ounces. Then cath 3 times a day to eliminate the residual. I measure to see if the bladder muscle strengthens and maybe I empty more 6 months from now.
Seems best to empty as much as you can on your own, as long as you don't push hard.

Just a thought
If you can urinate - are you emptying the bladder
I wasn't and so went through the condom (bloody useless) - indweller (I don't wanna do this) - supra pubic (not another infection) - clam op and SIC route
Never force a urination while a SIC is in position or you will damage your bladder lining
Just my experiance
But I'm L not C

Point taken, that to push the urine out WHILE cathing may damage the bladder lining.
But, why is it not a good idea to push to hard to void without a catheter? I do this while on my bowel program every other night, and it works very well. what are the possible side effects??
