I was wondering if anyone has had this done and what to exspect now that I am almost 4 weeks post surgery. I still have a foley cath, a super pubic tube, and a cath in the stoma. They will be getting rid of the foley and the stoma cath but the super pubic will stay for a while longer. How do you irrigate the bladder with out both caths to clean out the mucas?

Hi,
I had the augmentation done 4 months ago, I didn't have a mitranoff.
Things only stabled out after around 2-3 months. It's a very big surgery what you have had, so give it time, 4 weeks is still very early.
I had my drain taken out after 2 weeks I think. Then I had the SP and foley taken out a few days before discharge from hospital. I used to irrigate by using a syringe to pump the saline in the intermittent catheter, about 30mls if i remember rightly. Drawing out to start the flow etc.
Have a look on CareCure too as there's a wealth of information on there.
Good luck!

Our 14 year old daughter had the Mace and the Mitrofanoff done in November 2008. It took a good 3-4 months to level out after surgery, and after 6 months, everything was working great. We cath now about 5-6 times a day, and dont have to irrigate very often. The constant cathing flushes out most of the mucus. We use a size 12 cath, and she drains very easy. So far, it has given her alot more independence, and she mostly needs help, but can cath herself if necessary. She has no movement below the waist, and only partial in her right arm/hand. It's great, because now she doesn't have to disrobe to cath, and can stay in her wheelchair and we can be done in 5 minutes! Only 2 bladder infections in the last year, so we are doing good. She does take ditropan for bladder spasms and an antibiotic every day. Be patient, things will be fine. It just takes a while for your body to recover.

I had both surgerys done a little over a year ago. Was the best thing I ever did. Took a good 3 months to be totally healed and problem free. I only had to flush my cath for the first couple weeks, used a red robin in my belly button, if I remember right about 500cc's of saline solution into the red robin then it just drained into a recepticle. Twicw a day. I don't flush it out at all anymore. I still have mucous everytime I cath. If i've been drinking alcohol the next day it really has alot. So if you drink alcohol I recommend guzling a bunch of water before you go to bed. It helps. Had back to back uti's for years havent had one since. Good luck with everything, hope you'll be a happy as I am with your results.
