Hi, i'm a 24 year old c5/6 quad. Recently my boyfriend and i have decided we would like to have a child together but we have some concerns about some of the medication that i am on. I've found info about some of the meds but there are a couple that i haven't been able to find any info regarding their effects on pregnant woman, i even tried calling "mother risk" but they had little info on a couple of the meds i'm on. the 2 medications that i can't find much info about are

DOMPERIDONE (which i take 10mg, 3x daily, to aid in digestion) and
OXYBUTYNIN aka. ditropan (which i take 5mg,3x daily, to aid in bladder problems).

If anyone has any info that could help me it would be a big help.

thanks

Oxybutynin is not advised in pregnancy unless benefit out weighs the risk as toxicity has been found in animal studies and is contra-indicated in breast feeding as the drug is present in breast milk. Domperidone is contra-indicated in pregnancy and not advised in breast feeding.

IMO all non essential drugs should be avoided in pregnancy as there is just not enough information on the potential risks. It just depends whether you can face 9ish months of not having the medications.

Any drugs taken in pregnancy should be discussed with a doctor who can, with you, weigh up the potential risks/benefits.

Suddenly stopping some drugs can be dangerous and should only be done under medical supervision

My daughter is a doctor and very recently had a baby herself. I'll speak to her and find out what her view is, but like Trinity said you should always speak to your own doctor first. There are always alternatives if certain medications aren't suitable for pregnant mothers to be.
Get back to you soon.

Where abouts are you based? Tell us some more about you.

In the UK I could offer you details where exactly to find out professionally.

I've had 2 babies post injury, my last 20 years post injury, both naturally - not a c-section in sight. Having a baby at C5/6 has many complications for you and your medical team to be aware of but obviously its very possible.

Good choice btw - being a Mum is fab.

Hi me again!
Spoke to my daughter.
She says firstly you need to speak with your own doctor/medical team.
Manufacturers recomendations for both drugs are that they shouldn't be taken during pregnancy, unless benefit outweighs risk (think Trinity said this already) However, NEVER just stop taking drugs without consuting your doctor first. (Think Trinity said that too!) (Trinity are you a doctor??)
Basically speak to your doctor who will advise on pros/cons on what you can and can't take. + GOOD LUCK. LOL x
