I'm not sure if there is a thread like this already posted, so if there is, please direct me to it B)

Anyway, we built my house to be wheelchair accessible. We have a roll-in shower. I have a shower bench and a shower/commode chair. I always use the shower chair. I have only used the bench one time. I just don't feel completely stable in it. My back arches a little bit, so even if I am sitting all the way back on the bench, I still lean forward a tad. Also, the wheelchair I have now has a brake that isn't tightened. I don't know whats wrong with it, but even when its on my chair will move. With my shower floor not being level, I don't feel safe doing transfers from my wheelchair to the bench. I am getting a new wheelchair soon though.

But my issue with the shower chair is that its so big and bulky! My sister & I share a bathroom, so when she showers she has to move it out of the way, if I leave my face wash in the shower I have to move the shower chair out of the way, etc. It is just a huge pain in the rear! It just takes up so much room that I don't really want it anymore. I am thinking about either getting a larger shower bench, or something put on the wall (it doesn't have to be a commode). I liked the idea of using a shower wheelchair because then I would be able to move around and protect myself better if something happened... but if something like that did happen, I could just transfer into my wheelchair real quick, and like I said, I am just getting tired of the dang thing.

I was thinking something like this maybe?

OKAY, (I ramble, I know) so I was wondering if anyone had any advice/opinions for me? What kind of showering system/routine do you use?

At home I have a big old self propelled shower chair: sturdy, padded seat for comfort, u-shaped cut out for personal hygiene, reliable, makes showering easy. I don't mind that it's big and heavy, it is the easiest thing I have used, and when anyone else showers, it's not that hard to move. Though I never self propel on it, but just transfer over and then slide my chair out the way (brakes on, lift back wheels off ground slightly and push it away on front casters).

When I go away I take a shower chair like this: folds up into a case, padded seat, u-shaped cut out seat and flip arms for ease of transfer

I find the two types that you have shown uncomfortable, and actually less balanced, and I always worry about pressure when I'm on them as they can be hard surfaces. In fact, where I use them in hotels, I put my inflatable loo seat cushion on them 1st and then sit on that. A bit awkward but, for me, better than the alternative.

When I get to hotels, I like their set-up. I have a small booty, lol, so when there is a U shape seat or a shower/commode chair (like I have), I have to be so careful not to have one side of me fall in, or my whole butt, lol. Flatter surfaces just work better for me. Thanks for responding!

Hi Beautiful, I use a shower chair too and find it o.k. although it is a bit of a nuisance having to move it around as my bathroom is not as big as I would like. I must say I do like to have arms on whatever I am sitting on in the shower as I definately feel more secure. Good luck in finding the right seat for yourself.

When I'm out and about from motels to camp sites
I look for a plastic garden chair
Get somebody to put it under the shower
Attach a rope to the wheelchair so I can push it out from the water fall and pull it back when finished
L to mid T should be ok to sort os side/twist transfer like me but highT to C would need help

Yes you get wierd looks taking a plastic chair into a shower until it clicks in a AB mind
