This need is for my son JJ. He needs not just any doctor, but one who is at least somewhat knowledgeable about the issues faced by a C-3/4 quad. He thought he had found an acceptable doctor until the doc said he wouldn't refill the Baclofen prescription because it gives a "high". Now JJ can't even get the pain meds he needs. They do UA tests every month and if they find that you have been using pot, they drop you as a patient. JJ only takes 2-3 hits at bedtime and it greatly helps with his severe spasms. I have never before seen my son this depressed or in this much pain and I am very worried about him. He can't use his computer with this pain and so just sits and watches TV all day. He was injured in 1989 at age 18. Any help or suggestions will be sincerely appreciated.

Sorry to hear this, Judy. I took Baclofen at one time, and it wasn't too effective. Besides that, it made me sleepy, and I felt TERRIBLE when I took it. It was not a high! I'm a former addict, and I know a high when I have one. Is there a rehabilitation hospital around? Maybe there's a doctor affiliated with them. Nurses often know which doctors are good, so you might try asking any nurses you might know. I don't know how your son feels about counseling, but seeing a counselor might be helpful. Sometimes depression can wear down a person's ability to tolerate pain. Is there a Center for Independent Living in your community? They can be a good resource for referrals. Good luck to you!

What changed recently that he had to get another doctor?? Just curious, because it seems like things were ok for the first 20 or so years, right?

You can either explain to that DR he's been doing this routine for 20 years and everythings was fine up until then with the meds you asked him to perscribe your son. Or tell the doc that you're hitting the road in search of another one who'll give you what's required to help keep him on an even keel.

Most Primary Physicians don't have a clue how to handle SCI cases, so we need to teach them what works best for our care.

Baclofen doesn't give you a high, but the body does develop an addiction to it (so I've heard from other members on here). I don't know what the side affects are, but I remember reading they aren't fun and depression could also be a factor.

Please help -- I feel really stupid -- I'm not exactly computer savvy - but I can't figure out how/where to reply to the comments I received. Judy W

Don't panic. Your last post shows you are almost there.

If you want to include the comment you are answering click the "Reply" button next to the one marked "Quote" then just start typing your reply in the box that opens. You can click on the "Preview" button to see how your answer will look when you hit the "Add Reply" button.

If you want to reply without including the message you are replying to, come down to where you see three buttons marked "FAST REPLY" , "ADD REPLY" and "NEW TOPIC". Click "ADD REPLY" and just start typing.

Again you can use the "Preview" button to see your finished message. Then hit the "Add Reply" button to send it.

"FAST REPLY" is similar, except you cannot preview the message. It's probably best to use "ADD REPLY" unless you are sure you won't want to make any changes or corrections. However you are still able to make changes to your messages even after you've posted them - by using the "Edit" button at the foot of your post, but that facility doesn't last forever, I don't think.

I hope that helps. Just keep trying, and use the "preview" button until you get it right. You can always cancel your messages if you decide not to send them, simply by hitting the "Refresh" or "Back" button on your screen.

Finally, don't feel stupid. We all have to learn, and the only really stupid question is the one that isn't asked.
