Is anyone else disgusted at the BBC's proposed coverage of the 2010 Winter Paralympic Games in Vancouver?

Here's a quote from the blog of Lewis Wiltshire, BBC Sport’s Editor:

“we will be reporting the Winter Paralympics daily via news reports and this website using reporters and crews based in Vancouver and Whistler. There are provisional plans in place to stream the curling live through the BBC Sport website and BBC Red Button if the GB team make the medal rounds and we will also be broadcasting a one hour highlights programme on Monday 22 March on BBC TWO. We will not be broadcasting any other live coverage due to budget restrictions and the time zone factor. This decision was made several months ago. Paralympics TV, with whom we have a very close relationship, will be streaming the majority of the coverage live.”

The BBC has sent more staff to this year's winter olympics than Britain has in its team of athletes, yet it can't even commit to showing live coverage of the paralympics. All the action is filmed on behalf of the IPC, so the BBC don't even have to send film crews!

If the curlers make it to the medal round they MIGHT get coverage. Sean Rose, despite recently winning Britain's first gold medal in a world cup event, will not recieve any coverage, and neither will the rest of his fellow skiers.

This decision by the BBC sure does make us feel like second class citizens.

Haven't checked but I haven't seen any news on coverage in the US by anyone. I don't remember there being any from China either, just a special or something. Always pisses me off that ESPN has like 5 channels, but none that cover it.

I found this news article on the Disabled-World website....

The Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) acknowledges the importance of Paralympic Games media coverage, particularly through television, and is leading the Paralympic rights negotiations with all broadcasters worldwide. VANOC are focused on increasing their commitment to both live and extensive coverage. The television signals of the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games will be produced fully in High-Definition Television (HDTV), a first for the Paralympic Winter Games, and a step which allows broadcasters to bring the highest quality coverage to their viewers around the world. VANOC will continue to work with broadcasters to expand coverage of the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games so the widest possible audience can watch live coverage of Paralympic events on television.

Vancouver 2010 Olympics will be broadcast worldwide by a number of television broadcasters. As rights for the 2010 games have been packaged with those for the 2012 Summer Olympics, broadcasters will be largely identical for both events. The 2010 Olympics marks the first games where the host broadcasting facilities will be provided solely by OBS.

If you are not among the lucky visitors to the 2010 games, how do you get to see the Paralympics live?

Live coverage and replays of the 2010 Paralympic events can be found below:

Paralympic games TV coverage in Australia:

ABC TV plans to broadcast daily coverage of the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Winter Games from the 12 - 21 March bringing you all the thrills of the 2010 Winter Paralympics from Vancouver. ABC TV received the International Paralympics media award for outstanding coverage of the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games making it the second Paralympic Games in a row that ABC TV’s coverage has won Gold for its broadcast. (ABC TV won the IPC Broadcast Media Award for its coverage of the Turin 2006 Winter Paralympic Games.)

Watching the 2010 Olympics in Canada:

In Canada, the Olympic Games will be broadcast by a new consortium led by CTVglobemedia and Rogers Media, displacing previous broadcaster CBC Sports. Main English-language coverage will be shown on the CTV Television Network, while supplementary programming will be mainly shown on TSN and Rogers Sportsnet.

Fans of Canada’s National Sledge Team will have the chance to watch the team on television from start to finish of the Paralympic Winter Games. Canada’s Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium announced that every sledge hockey game featuring the host country at the Paralympics will be shown in English on CTV, TSN or Rogers Sportsnet and in French on RDS and RIS Info Sports. In addition, the gold medal game will be shown live on CTV and RDS. The Consortium will televise a total of 50 hours of the Paralympic Winter Games in English and French. All of the coverage will be available in High Definition.

Thanks for the post Brad. Glad to know that we'll be able to see coverage online even if our national broadcasters have forgotten about us...again!

It is disappointing that the BBC will only be showing a 1hr highlights programme especially with Paralympics GB sending are strongest ever winter Paralympics team out to Vancouver. With more probable medal chances than their able bodied counter parts!!! I can't see why they wouldn't show it at least on the red button. They do normally do a good job for the summer paralympics!

As for the 2012 London Games the coverage will be shown by Channel 4 who have promised full coverage and who clearly wanted the games and will hopefully do a great job.

www.paralympicsport.tv

Will be the best place to watch the games online.

If sky hd can not cover then why should disabled people pay the tv license so a ignorant and arrogant able bodied chief executive dictates what we should whatch. Where is equal opputunities in what people want to view on there tv set's.

This sucks.

They showed 15 days of able bodied winter olynpic's with only 1 gold medal.

Where is the justification and equal opputunties to all and every body.
