When I went for Drivers ED in High School some 40 yrs ago, I was taught that it was not only unsafe but I think we were also told it was illegal to drive using both feet in an automatic vehicle. Now in 2010, still using one leg (the remaining one :) ), Michigan Department of Transportation is requiring the vehicle to be used in a road test, after the amputation, must be fitted with hand controls. Am I wrong should I find this senseless, unduly expensive, and much more dangerous than driving the way we all were taught?

Having not been given a reason for this requirement, the only reason I can possibly think of would be to have one leg on the floorboard/firewall in case of hard braking (I may have answered my own question), and yes, meanwhile I will be researching MI (handicap) driving laws and regulations.

thats just stupid!!!! actually when i was a freshman in highschool the district tried to make me change schools to one with a PI program (physically impaired) to take drivers ed because they had cars with controls, even tho i already had a valid KS drivers lic. which i had taken driving with both feet. granted the person tested was concerned about me "riding" the break but realized that was how i learned so i knew how to keep from doin that. well after goin directly to the schoolboard and countless meetings. I was able to take the course without controls at my normal school. just a lil 2cents about how somtimes ab's think they know but really have no idea!
