I am new to this site, and actually new to the whole area. I recently had the opportunity to get together with a former professor of mine, after not seeing him for about 40 years. I found him to be confined to a wheelchair, suffering from the ravages of MS, which he has battled for many years. His mind, however, was as sharp as i remembered from many years ago. Although he has 24 hoiur care at home, he knows nothing about computers and watches television and reads newspapers to stay connected with the world. I, after much thought, offered to research how and at what cost he could be set up to use a computer, despite his disabilities. He currentl has no computer access at all. He has limited use of his hands and fingers, but does have some.
I hope to be able to put together a package of all the computer equipment and software necessary, as well as seeking out one on one tutoring for him. I, myself, have only little technological knowledge or expertise.
I await your kind help!
Allow me to make this a bit more clear. What I need most, at this time, is a list of the things necessary to provide my friend with computer access. That would include the software and hardware required to do this. I will research getting him help to learn the system.
Please help!

The only problem where I live is funding a dsl or cable Internet connection. There are groups/organizations around here that fix up and recycle computers and give them to anyone who needs one. If it has an operating system, there are free e-mail, browser, and word processing programs available. Those are the basics. A printer would be nice but is not absolutely essential. As for using it, if he has some use of his arms and hands, he can probably type with a typing stick like I am doing right now

Hi, if you are in the states, contact the local Area on Aging (they also help the disabled), and contact the Rehabilitation Department of your state. In my state Michigan Rehab provides computers to those that need them...they will also be able to help with software issues.

Good luck.
