Hello Ya... I was wondering if anyone try Morphine or Oxycodine for Pain Management? If yes, any side effect?
I'm currently taking Gabapentin 600mg, Bacoflen 10mg, and Vicodin 7.5/500.

I use oral morphine for break through pain - pain that is completely different to the nerve pain that the pregablin controls.
It's great if I catch the pain before it gets out of control but has awful side effects.

Oxycodone and morphine are both opiates, side effect include constipation, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, itching, dry mouth, confusion and dependence. There is also the problem of needing an increasing amount to achieve the same effect over time. That being said they can be very effective pain killers so don't let the list put you off! Like any drug the side effects have to be balanced against the good effects of the medication.

Both of the drugs have an instant release and a prolonged release formula, in the UK this is MST and Oxycontin for the prolonged release and Oxynorm and IR morphine or Oramorph for morphine.

I took reasonably large amount of oxycodone but found I could (eventually) come off this after starting pregabalin (Lyrica) and just have the occasional IR morphine for really bad days. I couldn't function well on high dose opiates.

Have you considered increasing your gabapentin dose? 600mg is not much or trying one of the other nerve pain drugs? Are you seeing a pain management doctor? A good one can be worth their weight in gold!

hello
my doctor put me on morphine tablets some years ago to help with my root nerve pain. I took them for two weeks when the course ran out over the weekend. before I could get my doctor to make out another prescription I started to have big spasms, almost like jackknifing in half and like any drug addict on this stuff, it causes constipation. Boy did it come out after a few days later. But the bottom (no pun intended) line is it had no affect on my pain so I didn't bother going back on the stuff. Started 6 weeks after my accident, 34yrs later its still with me. I don't think there is enough research into this problem, a lot of doctors prescribe anti convulsion tablets but I stopped taking any drugs some years ago.

regards

My Dad is elderly but with a steady, slow decline in memory loss until last winter when an ER physician gave him morphine for sudden neck pain. From that moment his inability to remember took a dramatic downturn from which he never recovered.

Ive been taking morphine since my accident 2 years ago. We have been slowly decreasing the amount I take. I'm at a stage now that I can go a couple of days without it. Im pretty addicted to it at have had nights where I can't sleep, get fidgety, sweat and feel really uncomfortable. If I have it after drinking large amounts of alcohol, with lyrica, I often get on a big high and have been known to halucinate. I will be on lyrica for the rest of my life for nerve pain, but morphine can be very addictive, therefore I have been put on panodine fort.

It depends on the type of pain that you're having. Oxy will not help with the "nerve pain", but I use it for my back and it works great but you have to reaaly take care of your bowels with the right foods and laxitives.
