Hi
If he is complete at that level, he will be paraplegic so will be able to lead a relatively normal life ie he can care for himself, drive himself etc etc, once he's rehabilitated and learnt to live in his w/chair he should be fine. Obviously there's the adjustment period of getting used to this which everyone handles differently, the more he fights the reality of his situation, the harder the rehab will be.
Just be there for him.

Thank you for the response Simon. Taking your advice and flying to Utah this morning. Will be away from the computer for at least a week. I'm so glad I found this website.

Hey! , Yes he will need your suport, When he gets home, try not to do everything for him! sounds mean, but the only way he can except his new way of life, finding what works for him, he will need to try to be independent as
possible, this is real hard at the start, Anger!! all the emotions he now has to deal with. Its important that when he is released from the hospital, he can get around the home,You yourself will start seeing how much accessability is lacking everywhere. he's young he will adapt... I found when I got in my wreck and broke my back at 19 yr. old, I am liveing a independent life in my wheelchair. I hope you all around him can adapt, my family, well lets just say they just dont know, still today what Im about, suppose fear on their part... I wish they could really see the possitive parts of me, not the chair.. But we in chairs live with this problem every day with public outings, sometimes the reactions of others can really effect us in the start.. Have faith in him, if he was cliff diving so to speak he seems to have the will to master this wheelchair living.. Eat healthy, exercize, gaining to much weight can be all the harder.. I will be thinking of you..

Hi diane, i believe the coming month after the post surgery will be tough. The physical therapy will be a lot of help and good nutrition. Probably, caregivers will help? Just wishing your nephew a lot of healthy outlook and a strong spirit. with my sincere prayers.
