I still have this pain (will be 14 years in March) for me when I get this type of burning sensation, I usually get some type of return back (I have an incomplete injury). I used to experience these a lot the first 2 or 3 years post injury.

In fact my right leg started hurting last week and just yesterday I noticed I regained some sensation in the back of my leg where the pain is.

I'm not saying that it is the same for you but just telling you what I personally experienced. You know the saying not all spinal cord injuries are the same.

Mine feel like i'm on fire all the time, feet burn, legs, butt, u can either mentally block it and get used to it or get drugs, i use sometimes to help at night.....i've yet to find anything that really takes it away........back ache is worse than the burning.....i think anyway..........

Yea, the burning usually indicates that your nervous system is changing, be it growing or pruning. My burning was really bad for about 3 years after injury and has started again after this new round of project walk therapy. So normally the burning is a good sign, although it can be unbearable at times.

I suggest that when an area is burning, that is one of the best times to exercise it and try to give some direction to the nervous system. Like if your legs are burning then is a good time to work with them.

pm if you want more info.

i think gabapentin is one of the drugs, made me feel like i had dead weight of my legs where i kinda had gotten used to the burning, they have 3 or 4 different ones for nerve pain, but i didnt like the feeling it gave me, i would rather deal with the sensation, kinda mind blocked it......but they do get over burdened at times....a good sci dr would be my best guess, if u can find one...........that is experienced in sci.....

You're correct airart1, Gabapentin is given for nerve pain and blocks the signals reaching the brain.
For those here who know me, know I've been injured over 'Half a Century' and have full sensation as I'm incomplete.
I don't give advice, but relate my own experience and how I coped. Its like TA said, "We are all different."
I suffered for years with excruciating pain in my right leg until I was put on Gabapentin. By the end of the week I was pain free, but that's just me.
For almost 3 years I've taken 600mg X 3 of Gabapentin; I've been reasonably pain free but still kept my full sensation.
Recently the nerve pain has started to return; just a bit at first but now its much worse.
On Thursday I'm seeing my Dr to ask for some 100mg caps, to slowly increase my Gabapentin to 700mg X 3.
Its like all drugs, our bodies get used to them so we end up taking more.
I think, what ever works for you is always the right way to go.
Good luck

Mike

Personally gabapentin did not agree with me, I had horrendous side effects but pregabalin however I think is a miracle drug! They are not dissimilar drugs but the difference to me was immense. I get a lot of neuro pain, the burning, electric shock pain. Pregabalin gave me my life back and meant that I could go back to work and function.

Different drugs work differently for everybody. Finding the right treatment, whether it be drug based or otherwise is the key.

Alot of times the burning sensation is also nerves dying. The girlfriend is on Lyrica at my suggestion to her dr. I was on it for a while but my body gets used to drugs really quick and they dont usually work for very long.
