Hey. I've posted here once before just for general inquiries but now I have an actual subject to discuss.

My boyfriend is a T6,7,8 and also has scoliosis.

Recently, he's been having troubles breathing. He claims he's dying. He says he has no pain, just a tight chest and it feels like he can't breathe. He's felt this way in the past, but it hasn't lasted this long before.

Last time it happened, pain was included. We went to the hospital and his lungs came up fine and they told him he just had a bladder infection.

I was just wondering if you guys had any ideas as to what the chest issues could be. Asthma?

Thanks!

Well how long has he been paralyzed?? It would help out a lot if you Filled in your profile info :wink05: I'm pretty sure if you went to the hospital to get him checked out they would have told you he had asthma... but some doctors are not the brightest lol. It could be anxiety just as well!!!

He's been paralyzed for over 10 years. He's 26 yrs old.
I'm positive its not anxiety and when we went to the hospital it was for the pain...shortness of breath was just something he had mentioned. Now he has no pain, just tightness and he says he feels like he can't breathe.

I'm not looking for a diagnosis or anything. Just some ideas as to what it could be. He knows when he has a bladder infection and says he has one, but that its never in the past affected his breathing.

All I know is that he'd be the first to know if something was up. And he refuses to go to the hospital or even the clinic half the time.

Which is why I came here. Probably more for my knowledge.

a bladder infection will increase general spasticity, and that tightness will sometimes affect breathing. Doesn't happen to me often, but when it does it is most unpleasant.

10 years post injury, 26 years old, he pretty much knows what's going on with his body/injury at this time. Did they do bloodwork??? Not trying to diagnose either... just trying to help :wink05:

the only time that I ever experienced shortness of breath with any type of infection in regards to bladder was when I had kidney stones.

Hmm. He says he hasn't been having spasms any more than usual. I wish he would just suck it up and let me take him to a clinic or something.

It's been a few months since the hospital incident.

I worry that it could be something to do with his kidneys. He went to his Urologist for his regular checkup and the results were that his kidney function has decreased 20% since his last visit, 6 months earlier.

I just wish there was something I could do to make him feel better.

Hmmmmm hard to help someone that doesn't want to be helped. Hopefully it's nothing serious, I always have blood work done to see what's going on if I'm not feeling 100% and don't know what the cause is.

It could be heart burn or gas.

There's a lot of possibilities. Allergies? Is there a particular room in the house where it happens? Maybe it's mold, or dust... it could be a new detergent of fabric softener. Asthma and acid reflux have been mentioned. Stress can be an issue: it can cause tension, making it harder to breathe.

It's his breathing. He should go see a doctor and get it checked out properly because there's too many possibilities.

There is something called the MS hug.

I'm not suggesting he has MS but different neurological problems can have a lot in common sometimes!

Has he been seen by a pulmonologist and had pulmonary function tests done? Maybe the scoliosis is getting a bit worse and decreasing his lung capacity??
