After nearly 3 years we have just found out from the head of financial services that my next kin is entitled to carer's allowance and the paper work was aided by the by the of a senior social worker.
This sucks when you are never informed on what you should be entitled to.

Nice benefit for you folks in the UK. Wish we had it here in the U.S. We're expected to either pay out of pocket for a PCA or have a family member do it for free. Can't have none of that Evil Socialized Medicine!

i had a similar experience. in florida quads don't pay property tax. i didn't know this and even had accountants do my taxes and they didn't clue me in. finally i met a recent transplant to florida who told me about it. nothing i could do about the years i paid but it's a super break it saves me 12k or more per year! yeah for me. i just found out when i took my taxes this time that you can deduct your health insurance from taxes. who knew? we pay $8k per year and that's big bucks.

there needs to be a manual addressing the financial ramafacations of being disabled.

hi fellow gimps! i'm a c 6/7 quad and have been injured since 1986. i was in a roll over hydroplane accident and it took hours for the paramedics to get me out of the car in the pouring rain. that definately wasn't my day. but alas life goes on!

agreed!

we just found out that our new $60k van is a complete tax write-off because it's adapted...this is why i do our taxes myself, very few accountants know the in's and out's of disability write-offs!

I'm sure it depends on level of injury and individual needs, but we live in NYS (one of the most "giving" states from what I'm told), and my bf has services covered by medicaid. I know of other quads as well that have homecare services (some nursing, some PCA), but again, maybe it's only covered in some states.

As a former Federal employee, I was able to keep my health insurance after I retired on disability indefinitely. I currently have Blue Cross/Blue Shield. It pays 80% of covered expenses, but a PCA on an on-going basis is not a covered benefit. Skilled nursing care, in-home, is only covered for very short periods under special circumstances. So, the long-and-short of it is, a PCA is an out-of-pocket expense for me. My wife gets nothing for helping with my personal care. Our combined income is too much for Medicaid or any other state programs. I either have to be completely destitute or rich. I fall somewhere in between, so I'm SOL, PDQ.
