Obviously, I do not drive, but by law I have to have a picture ID. No biggie, right??

My ID had expired so I went to the DMV to renew it... just take the picture and go... that's all I did last time.

Well obviously times have changed since the last time I got my ID done. They now require your fingerprints. A nice little machine just put your two thumbs on it and it scans and poof you're now in the system.

Well, what if you can't get to this nifty little high-tech machine because ummmmmm your arms don't work??? No problem, bring me The high dollar machine as close to the edge as possible... yeah that's still a problem for someone that can not move their arms lol.

My mom and I were cracking up (luckily the man was patient and humorous/flirting with my mom). So my mom is holding one of my hands on this thumb print machine (and it has to be your thumb) and the guy is trying to help as much as possible. We then trick the machine to do one thumb at a time.

It was quite an experience... not to mention the place was packed and I was at the end of the line... when the wheelchair friendly spot became open... I went straight to the front! I know it pissed off some people but hey those are just the advantages to breaking your neck. :D :)

Haha atleast there are nice people at your DMV. All they hire at the one here are total douche boxes! I went to get my ID and the lady behind the desk got royally pissed when she found out I couldn't sign my signature! I finally got her talked in to letting my sister sign my name for me hehe.
Fear is the dumbest thing that we've ever created in our minds; its just so stupid... it stands in the way of everything and it achieves nothing.

Oooooh I forgot the check-in lady told me I needed to move (I was at the back of the line and it's a really small place) because I was a FIRE HAZARD. I don't know what the deal is with people always telling me to move because I'm a "fire hazard" lol.

She ended up making up for it by making sure the guy running the WC friendly camera/desk knew I was there.

haha the guy thought my mom was my sister... I always have issues with signature when it comes to dealing with women, otherwise no problem. Lol

This post has been edited by mellowgator: 09 March 2010 - 10:40 PM

hi fellow gimps! i'm a c 6/7 quad and have been injured since 1986. i was in a roll over hydroplane accident and it took hours for the paramedics to get me out of the car in the pouring rain. that definately wasn't my day. but alas life goes on!

Ummmmmm I think they do have a sip and puff controlled car... I SURE AS HELL WOULDN'T DRIVE IT... can you imagine if I spasmed????? I can just see it now headline news... "quadriplegic sneeze's and takes out freeway" LOL.

But lower-level quads with restricted finger movement... that could be an issue with the thumb prints.

Tex,
2 things:

You are a fire hazard because you are so damned Hot!

I read in one place that sip and puff controls on a van pushed the price up over $100,000 USD. That is a lott of cab fares.
Look! It's a snail! It's a sloth! Able to creep short distances before lunch!

Just get a toyota, no need to accelerate, it does it itself!

The woman working at the DMV here was a royal bitch 5 years ago when I needed to get switched over from saskatchewan to Alberta. I need a letter from my landlord plus copies of my phone and has bills to prove I live there? Plus a bank statement from that month.
Not really looking forward to going through that shit now. I'll probably hafta prove I'm paralyzed by trying to stand up, then get told I shouldn't be driving, then get shit for letting my licence expire while I was in the hospital!

That was 5 years ago BEFORE I was gimped because I moved from saskatchewan to Alberta. Plus I'm diabetic so had to get a doctors note, but the doctor from lloydminster (30 miles away, where I had moved from and lived a whole block into saskatchewan) wasn't good enough. Then the bitch has the nerve to tell me 'I shouldn't be driving if I have health problems' even though the doctor says I'm healthy enough to drive. Christ, I been driving solo since I was 2 and with my dad even longer

i cant believe you have to give up a fingerprint, i'm pretty sure thats unconstitutional, i wont ever give up my fingerprints to get a drivers license, thats against your rights to do that.......birth certificate i can understand, but to be fingerprinted, thats ridiculous.....

Well the first time I went to go get my ID all they needed was a birth certificate and my Social Security card... I mean it's not a big deal to me for them to have my fingerprints... not like I have anything to hide but I see what you're saying lol.

Better the fingerprint than your social security number. What can anyone do with someone's fingerprint, anyway???

Here's stupidity, in order to get an ID you need a birth certificate, If you don't have the original birth certificate, you phone where ever and tell them you need a copy and tell them the adress to mail it to. How hard is it to claim to be someone on the phone, get their birth certificate mailed to you, then go get their I'd with your picture on it?

And as far as the jerks balking as they continued to wait in line: yep, just let 'em know a switch would be happily arranged if possible!!
Thanks for the chuckle of the day!

Driving is considered a "privilege" not a right, and THEY can require anything they please in order to supply you with a license or ID card, as THEY hold all the cards... :dancegirl: :angry2:

Beverly, LOL I will have to remember that next time somebody gives me a dirty look for something like that. I would gladly SWITCH with them... but then again I don't know if I would want to stand in line for 3 hours lol.

I'm not sure about the whole legal aspect of it all... I'm sure someone will look it up ha.

So you need fingerprints for a driver's licence in the US now?? I asked a few people if you now need them here in Germany (the mother country of bureaucracy!), and everybody said: "You're crazy? Rubbish!" (You need fingerprints for ID starting this year, though.) I find that fascinating: More paranoia in the States than here ... :Birthday_Balloons: Good luck, and keep up the good humour!

Angela - I like your posts very much! They often give me a smile for the whole day. Thank you.

"More paranoia in the States than here" yes, but mainly because of more crime here..mainly due to our american false sense of entitlement

You sure don't need thumb prints for a driver's license in Australia or for any other form of ID either unless you end up in the slammer!!!!!!!!

:) awe thanks Jenny... I try to show the silver lining in my stories! As you can see from everybody else's homework, it's not MANDATORY for a fingerprint in all the states... I'm really surprised Texas hasn't appealed it!

My boyfriend and I went out for a meal once in Atlanta. I forget where exactly it was, but it was some sports bar. There was a huge space around this empty table and we asked if we could sit there so my guide/service dog could lay under the table out of the way. We were promptly told it was a fire hazard to let me sit there and that we would have to sit somewhere else. Where we were put was right in the way and people constantly almost tripped over me and we didn't enjoy the meal at all because I was constantly trying to keep my dog tucked under a tiny table out of the way. I even got elbowed in the head!

If that wasn't bad enough they actually let some guy who had broken his leg sit at the table we wanted to sit at! He could barely hobble around on the crutches and it took him forever to figure out how to sit down and get up and he laid his crutches on the floor so they were blocking the fire exit.

The reason we were given is that I wouldn't be able to get out of the building fast enough in the case of a fire and that we would prevent others from getting out. Julian said that if there was a fire we'd be out of there before anyone else because we would have gotten outside in a few seconds and he would have thrown me over his shoulder and over the small fence outside! :mfrlol: (Which would completely trap anyone who couldn't hop the fence in a small area anyway!) But try explaining that to some people! :)

That fire hazard stuff is a crock,,, they put you where they want in order to divide up the patrons amongst the wait staff. If there really was a fire,, the tables and chairs are movable,,, and do they put the people with small children in the back???? They don't move very fast either.

I've never had anyone try that routine with me,,,, I can't wait.

Fire hazard? I'm not a f*@king stump. How the hell did I manage to get in here in the 1st place? I can move faster in my chair than most people do walking
