The spring season is hunting us down which means it's not long until the steam rallies starts which means many weekends spent in fields. I'm so excited I could squeal like a girl in overals.

I went to my local cycle shop to replace my rather worn tyres to be told that 24" is an "obsolete size" and that the only tyres they'd be able to get were... well slicks and about as much such in the grass / mud / beer tent as broken toilet.

Surely he was muttering nonsense? Can anyone recommend where I can get some proper tyres with some grip on them for 24" tyres? The local mobility stores are wonderful in that they don't open on weekends so I've never really had the chance to visit them. Is there anywhere online I can go?

The whole point of getting the chair was to give me freedom. It'll be no good if I'm stuck in beer tents all summer. :dancegirl:

I recommend THESE .  Online sales are easy, delivery is fast, and their prices are competitive.   Take no notice of the reference to 22" wheels. What you need to do is match the size in millimeters (in this case 507) with the tyres you already have fitted.

Hurrah!!

Now I just need to get the foot plate sorted (trying to find somewhere that sells foot plates AND open at the weekend seems impossible. I might start employing a friend to take my chair to places on my behalf) and my tow rope handy and I'm sorted!! :ranting: :dancegirl:

Thank you very much x

there are some pretty random sizes in WC tyres.

i have some spinergys that say 24" but there is no way on earth you could get 24" mtb tyres on them. they are part way between 24" and 25"
and the ONLY tyre that will fit are some crappy kenda tyres that i dont like.

this is done to try and match the overall wheel circum of 25" every day tyres with the over circum of offroad wheels. good idea but useless if you cant get tyres for them.

the best WC offroad wheels i have seen are the Rogue Tundra Wheels from Marvel with Maxis hookworm 2 1/2 inch tyres. they are beasts and have offset hubs to ensure clearance.

I have just got some Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres from RGK £20 each plus delivery I am sure they would do the trick on wet grass. I fitted them today and so far I am happy they will offer more grip than the Clinchers I have just taken off.

I have 24 inch wheels take a look:- http://www.rgklife.c...;products_id=32
If I fall out of my wheelchair in the woods would anybody hear me?

Hiya Doodle,
Have a look at your current tyres. If they have the size 507 printed on them, thenTHESE will fit. I posted THIS in one of the posts above. It explains everything about tyre sizing.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Grey beard, my tyre reads 540mm though, just checked! I came across those tyres you linked from RGK and really like them! As I only want a black tread. I don't like the grey colour! I just received those schwalbe downtown and they arrived in grey so I'm returning them! My options may be to get a 22" wheel or a 25" wheel to get a decent all terrain tyre!
Everything will be alright in the end, if it's not alright then it's not the end!

Why not give Bill a ring at www.mobilityscotland.net. He's a really helpful guy and if you explain what you want he can usually come up with something.

Why not check out your local bike shop. A lot of BMX'ers run 24" wheels. I use Maxxis holy rollers which are 1.8" wide but they also come in 2.4"

If you want to save a bit more cash try Steve Dent's www.spokz.co.uk website.

Hey

I just bought a set of these and mounted them up last night, I will take a picture when I get home if you like. they are 24x1.8" from memory. I ordered them through my local Bicycle shop, they didn't have them in stock but it was not to hard for them to get the tires in.

The difference between tyres designed for bikes and those for chairs is the tread pattern. The chair style MTB tyres i have do not have any tread along one edge of the wheel, this is the edge near your hand rim so you dont rip your hands apart on the knobbles on the tyres. It makes the whole pushing experience better.

I have normal marthon plus tyres which i used on a day to day basis, i work and live on 56 acres of woodland and field and except in extreme mud i dont have a problem getting about with these, its about knowing where to put the weight in your chair to get max traction. I am also v.good on back wheels only.

The one thing that helps in foam handrims. I had the rubber but that kept comming off so i got some foam rims from EPC. I think they are meant for quads who have limited pushing strength but they work well for me. It is harder to freewheel downhill as you get friction on your hands but otherwise good. My chair also has suspension which i wouldnt be without.

Pity you are in UK as I have two pairs of 25" rims - one pair spoked Sun 25" with 1.75 smoothe tyres, one pair X-Core three spoke 25" with knobby MTB type tyres. Anyone in Australia interested, PM me for further details.

Hi these tyre sizes are confusing me.

I need black Mountain bike type tyres for 24" rims

Will these fit? I know its says will fit 22" only, but someone above said they'll be ok.

My rim reads 540mm
