hello...
i was using a foley for a month because i had a false passage i made with the plastic caths. i just switched back to self cathing 2 weeks ago but have this problem where i keep leaking urine, more so when i move around. its really frusterating to deal with  ; i have to wear diapers so the pee wont soak through my clothing. i cath every 3 hours, i have to change multiple times a day; my dr gave me oxybutin to relax my bladder so i wont have no spasms or anything but that doesnt help at all, even if i double up on them. can anyone offer any advice?

Maybe your bladder just needs to be "retrained". A lot of times when foleys are removed from ab people they have urgency and poor control. Some facilities do bladder training, where you clamp the foley for a few hours and then release and reclamp.
Hopefully your problem will be short-lived once your bladder and "sphincter" get back to working again!
Good luck!

Hello,

I think it might be a good idea to pay especially close attention to your fluid intake at this time to ensure that you're cathing enough depending on the amount that you drink. For example if you're drinking 2-3 litres a day you should be aiming to do an S.I.C. around every 3-4 hours as the case may be.

And the second thing i would reccommend is wearing a condom sheath attached to a leg bag, to catch any unfortunate leakage that might occur in between cathing times which would eliminate the need for you to wear a diaper just in the meantime while you find the balance again, which you will. Good luck.

Take Care,
C.

hey,

i have a similar problem. i wear a condom catheter and a leg bag. it seems that the repetitive use of the condom catheter is irritating my skin. i just started taking a ditupram
(a bed wetting prevention drug to control bladder spasms). my doctor thinks that the backlofin that im taking could be causing me to leak. does anybody have any suggestions?

My husband had a problem with the condom catheter tearing his skin when removing it. He started putting a small amount of baby powder on his hands (very small dusting), then applied it to himself before putting on the condom. This made removal much easier (for everyone concerned). Have to be careful not to use too much powder or the condom won't stay on, but just a bit strategically placed will help with the skin irritation until you get back on track. Seems like every 3 mos. or so he starts to leak for no apparent reason. I have noticed that even the smallest change in his routine throws him off. For instance, he was taking one 10mg Vesicare tablet and when he switched to taking 2, 5mg tablets (the dr. gave it to him for free), he started to leak. Lasted only about a week but it was still problematic. So, keep an eye on the little changes in your routine. It could be something simple that is affecting your system in general.

well i found that i was constantly leaking for so long cause of a uti, and now that it left, no more constant leaking, i went to sleep and woke up without being covered in urine, this makes me happy, i never thought a uti would do that, i thought i would share this cause maybe this could be the problem with someone else

-- im still leaking some but no where near how it was

Glad to hear you've got it cleared up. I've noticed more leaking when infected, too.

The suggestion of a condom cath, is a good one, in that it relieves a lot of worry. The skin breakdown thing can be a problem,, but they make a skin prep that helps a lot.

Another thing that worked for me,,, for a while,, was using one inch wide surgical tape (paper tape) wrapped snugly around my member. You don't want it tight enough to make the thing turn blue,, just snug. You can still cath,, it just tightens things up a bit.

It's a shame,, but we guys are fortunate in this regard,, as we have more options than women. For you,, the general rule is that if drugs don't aleviate the leaking,, either a foley or a surgical procedure (Mitrinoff)(sp).

The options for us ladies are pretty limited. To my knowledge they are:
1. Medication - eg Oxybutanin for bladder spasms..
2. Restorative Surgery - same as many older ladies need, or after having children some women need it to restore the valve..
3. Permanent Foley drainage system..

Having the Mitrofanoff does not necessarily "close up" the urethra, so leakage would still be a problem..

I don't know of any other methods to prevent the leaking.. Perhaps try to find a more informed doctor..

Sorry I couldn't be of more help..
What's important is not what happens to us, but how we react to what happens to us..

God gave us two ends, one to think with, n one to sit on.. Success depends on which one u use.. Heads u win, tails u lose..

If you do intermittent cathing and are still leaking, talk to your doctor about botox injections.

Good luck.
