Hello all:

My husband and I are in the process of picking out a new bed. The Medical Equipment Providers suggests a king bed where either side can be adjusted. So my husband (injury at T7) can adjust his head and legs without waking me up. (Of course the insurance company wants to go cheaper and get us a queen which would mean we couldn't adjust our sides separately.)

Before I do battle with the insurance company, I'd like to know if anyone has slept on one of these types of adjustable beds.

Are they comfortable? Most likely he would have an airflow mattress (he's got a nasty pressure sore now) and I would have a firm mattress on my side.

Thanks for any insight you can provide me.

I have an Ultramatic king size adjustable bed. both sides are adjustable. they make a queen too, but i found it too hard to dress/undress on the smaller surface due to VVV

I LOVE the bed. The only part I don't like is the joint where the mattresses meet. If I'm alone I sometimes get stuck in the crack of the bed. It's also inconvenient to have sex on-no matter how you lay the joint just gets in the way.

I'm currently looking at solutions. I've found a mattress company that locally custom builds mattresses. they can put one together for me that is only split for the upper portion, minimizing the worst part for getting stuck in but still allowing both heads to go up n down. I just need to figure out my mattress choice now (spring, foam/etc)

Custom sheets will be the next hurdle.

My local medical supply company said that a company they know of could do the same w/ specialized mattresses like you're looking for, but I haven't looked into that option.

Hope that helps a bit...let me know if you'd like me to dig up more info.

I would defintely advise you to go with a king if possible. The more independance your hubby is able to have, the better. It's also possible that the insurance company would agree to pay for the cost of a queen, and you would just chip in the difference. Good Luck!

Your lucky to have insurance picking up the tab on anythng short of a rental twin hospital bed with an air flow matress.

I'm in a king size bed with a memory foam top, that seems to do the trick absorbing movement on either side of the bed. Good luck with your fight, though. I always suggest trying to get anything and everything you can.

Thanks for all the info. I'm going to speak with the medical equipment person to find out which bed they recommend. I want to say it's from MasterTransfer --Valient Series? But I'm not sure. I will let you know. I will also check out the brands mentioned in this forum.

Yeah, I am wondering about sex when you have the two mattresses meet in the middle.

I also figure with the king, you would forever be buying twin sheet sets for the fitted sheets and king sheet sets for the top. Lots of $$$.

So those are the cons to getting a dual-twin bed (aka king).

The pros of a king are the ability to adjust the bed where ever you like and not bother the other person. Plus my husband is hypersensitive on his right side and seems to need the extra room.

Yes, we are lucky to have this covered by insurance since my husband was hurt on the job. Otherwise, things would really suck. But sometimes, in my midst of being grateful for whatever I can get for my husband's healing, I recall this was not his fault and he's entitled to reasonable medical expenses, of which there's no number, there's just this "reasonable people agreement" deal according to our attorney.

Insurance want to push a queen on us (actually go back to a full side bed if they have their way), but I think "reasonable" people would agree a spouse should sleep comfortably next to her husband, where both get a good night's sleep.

Will check in later. Thanks for all your help!

Just one last suggestion-search for a non medical bed. They are less expensive and have better warranty. (at least when I bought mine 10 years ago) The only feature a non medical won't have is the raise/lower of the entire bed.

In Canada there are at least 3 companies selling adjustables and probably more that I haven't noticed.

Good luck with this!

Ok, selfishly I am leaning toward the queen bed because I'd like to have good sex and I'm worried about that crack going down the middle of a dual-twin/king bed. Ha ha. It's fine with me for my man to wake me up once a night to cath and to make love.

Practical-wise, however, here are links to the bed options and maybe I should look at the dual-twin/king again. (Also, I just found out at least for the hospital bed being rented for us --that's only a twin - Work Comp will pay for some special sheets.)

It will be a battle either way to have a queen (which is the size of bed we have now) or a dual-twin bed (i.e. king.)

There's a special type of mattress that automatically turns the person and I'm wondering if this makes sense to push for.

Or I think the one the medical equipment provider was suggesting was this one.

For people like my husband, I would love to hear from your significant other on how they like sleeping with you and having intimate relations on these types of beds. (Hope that's not too personal.)

Thanks so much!!!! Yes, we are very , very lucky to be covered under Worker's Comp, albeit his injury was not his fault and I do feel a bit of entitlement here for anything that makes my man comfortable and happy.
