Hello,

I just found this website/message board and it looks like it will be very helpful for the novel I'm writing. I'm Lisa and I'm a critical care nurse, so i know a bit about spinal cord injuries obviously. I'm currently at work on my MFA in creative writing and for some reason I've started a novel where the protagonist (female) is a fairly new paraplegic. She's in her mid-20s, been married just a short time and so far is trying to adjust to being home from rehab, etc.

Anyway, I'm wondering if there's anyone here who could help with background information related to a female with a C7 injury (I want her to have use of her upper body, but be paralyzed from the belly button down).

I want to be accurate on the information I'm writing about so if there's anyone here who is willing to talk to me in depth about being a paraplegic (female) and also from the spouse's point of view, I'd be very appreciative and you'd also get a mention once the book is published.

You can contact me at LisaRN911@aol.com if you are interested or know anyone who would be.

Thank you for reading this!

Ack, need more coffee! I meant to say that my protagonist has a T9 injury. Sorry about that!

I just saw your post. Thanks for the good wishes. Same to you! Sounds like we are looking for similar information. You probably already know this, but I saw a Harlequin book the other day where the protagonist is a paraplegic.

If you want to contact me, you can reach me at LisaRN911@aol.com. I'm sure we could help each other out with the research.

Take care,

Lisa

Hi,

I am in the middle of a novel, too! Actually, the way it's going, it'd be a long-running soap opera by now!
Anyway, I've been lurking on the board for several months now and found a wealth of information that I've already been able to apply. Maybe Simon could start a For Writers Only and let us ask away so we don't have to get so personal with people....

I am very curious, since there are so few fiction stories out there with protagonists or even side characters in wheelchairs, how we all decided this is an essential for one of our characters. I would very much like to talk with other writers in general, and especially other writers who create characters with the same traits as mine!

If you really want to find out what it's like have you thought about volunteering at your local spinal injuries rehab centre? Nothing like seeing it first hand and talking face to face.
