Fears for disabled elderly benefits

Concern is mounting mounting that a weekly benefit for disabled elderly people will be scrapped to pay for the government's planned National Care Service.

Attendance allowance is claimed by 1.6 million people, who get it regardless of means.

Ministers have promised no one currently getting the money will lose it. But there are fears future claimants will be means-tested or have their payments restricted.

Plans are expected to be laid out in a White Paper in the next few days. Simon Gompertz reports.
