Disabled 'wrongly denied' benefit

Thousands of seriously ill and disabled people who are unable to work are being wrongly denied benefits, a report by Citizens Advice has claimed.

The bureau says the system of assessing Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) claimants is failing, with 68% of those assessed told they are fit for work.

It says "crude" tests fail to allow for the complexities of many illnesses.

The government says it plans to exempt cancer suffers from testing and show "more sensitivity" for some illnesses.

I was told I "should at least pump gas somewhere or work behind the counter at a fast food place. Person x was in a wheelchair for only 6 months and they went back to work"

Well good for them, at 6 months I was still 8 months from rehab

I had the most depressing experience today. Someone from JS+ was explaining the ESA sytem to a large group of social workers who work with some very disturbed young adults. The conversation went like this...

DWP - EVERYONE has to come in for an interview

SWs- but some of our clients cannot safely leave the house, Is there a home visit option?

DWP- No they need to attend unless the doctor says they cant.

SWs- OK can the doctor do a home visit?

DWP - No!

SWs- Are you saying somone who cannot leave the house has to leave the house to see a doctor who will assess whether they can leave the house?

DWP - Yes!

Sigh ...............

Very brief history:
5 discs damaged in RTA in 1983
Herniated L4 L5 2001
Scaring on cord 2001
Crap mobility - chronic pain - after discectomy and decompresion ops.
Never in position to return to work. :)

ok, had an incapacity benefit interview in 2004 and was told that if I had my spine fused, I may not be able to walk again, but I would/may also loose the chronic pain/crap mobility that prevented me from working. why did you refuse this operation ? Er... I don't know? :mfromg: :drooldrip:

Tough ain't it. Now a para as I lost all below waist in july 2009. Perhaps the medical interviewer had a voo doo doll !!!

Actually I hope I can return to some form of work maybe later in the year as 80% of the pain has now gone too. After 9 years off work, I'm a bit bored now!
:)
