I'm pondering getting a tattoo on my back incorporating or even making a feature of my surgical scar (simple straight line from T1 to T7 with the obligatory staple points.

Any suggestions from experienced (or inexperienced) body art practitioners out there?

I have a wrist band tattoo, that almost covers my wrist fusion scar. (just a good excuse to get another tatt I think =) )

Hi first post!!
when i was still in herrshey medicaal center after my sci i joked with my surgeon after the first cpl surgery "why dont you do me a favor and just put a zipper in so you dont have to keep cutting me open?" ever since then i thought about covering my scar with a zipper tattoo.

i always thought it was a cool idea thought id suggest it to you.

Funnily enough I refer to it as my Zipper to my kids! Uncanny or what, Great minds and all that...

Thank you! I should have mentioned I had the tree done first. It was a couple more years till I added the sun, figured life can't grow without light

thanks so far to those who responded, looking for examples of what you guys/gals have and suggestions for me.

Pretty sure I'm going to go for it now just need to decide on what it's to be.

I'm working up my courage to get one on the back of my neck... I know it's going to hurt on the spine but my biggest concern is the spasticity! I'm hypersensitive where they did the fusion... but it will be done.

Having a zipper tattoo on your scar ....huh uh!! It just freaks me out. There is a 40cm scar like that down the front of my torso.



I've also heard that having a tattoo on a scar could be dangerous for some reason. Not all artists are willing to do it.

Tex Angel, that's bound to sting a bit but I'll bet it's worth it afterwards. When ever you decide what to do and finally do it bless us with a picture please!


As for the risk of tatooing a scar, I'm thinking around to enhance it rather than on it to cover it. After all it's happened and "I've got the chair to prove it" to bastardise a popular saying and as for the t-shirts, say no more!

Wow that's really some work, must have taken ages. looks really cool

Old'n faded, but my barely visible scar is running through the middle. Considering that the tatt was done before my surgery ('86) the surgeon did a fab job of lining it back up.
I had totally forgotten until now that I already had the tatt prior doh!
Google can lead you to heaps of tattoo sites..good luck.

I already know what I want I just have to find a good tattoo artist here in Dallas... I will definitely post pictures!

I have 4 and this one won't be to cover my scar or anything (can't see my surgery scar because of the level of injury anyway)

Just a thought, but I heard if you have a lower back tattoo you're not suppose to get an epidural in the future because of the possibility of ink going into the spine. Could a tattoo over your scar screw you over later on in life once a cure is found?

One of the coolest neck tattoo's I saw was in rehab, not over his scar but on the side of his neck showing his vertebrae and his injury exploding.

thursday 29th april 2010 i am having mid back to lowest point and both cheeks
total sitting for this is estimated at 12hrs one session tattoo
pictures will be posted once heeled
all in aid of whizz kidz

You should definitely do it, but make sure it's very meaningful to you. I guess that's obvious but on going through the same thing now - contemplating what ink I should get. Think of something that's helped you or is helping you get through the process. That's the way I am leaning. Good luck!

I'm thinking the same thing as far as spasticity goes. My spasms aren't too bad, but there are predictable. I'd like to get some ink on my underarm, but I would hate to screw up the tattoo artist. I guess it's worth a shot.

maybe research your family crest if your from scottish descent and have the kids names incorporated into it?

Hi Colin what about Nessie (Loch Ness Monster) that would definately hide the scar, and the kids would love it.

is a surgeon scalpel cut
with all anatomical organ ateries and veins shown like the thing
with muscular tissue shown well toned
spinal bones incorating massive explosion
the art work look's great
can't wait till thursday
12 - 14 hours needle bashing
pictures posted once it has heeled
