I have a drink problem.... no not like that!!! My husband and I are pretty moderate in our alcohol intake, but like a glass of wine a few times a week with dinner. Anyway Ive noticed over the last few weeks that Im starting to feel really ill after just one small glass of white or red. Im getting really bad acid, indigestion, and a grumbly tummy!!! Now I never ever have this sort of problem, Ive always had a cast iron digestive system. So Im wondering could this be to do with the fact that obviously Im sitting all the time, and could this be causing acid reflux as it could maybe causing the gastric sphincter not to shut properly? Has anyone else had similar problems? I seem to be ok with small quantities of whisky and gin, and havent tried beer recently, but looks like Im going to have to give up wine!!!

Cheers

Maybe you have developed an intolerance, Lucydog?

Since as long as I can remember, alcohol gives me chest pains - even a mouthful of beer can do it. Alcohol used to give me terrible stomach ache, but now I can't feel my stomach, that's not a problem! But, it does still hurt my chest - it feels like really bad indigestion. The pain goes down my arms too.
Because of this, I have never been drunk in my life (and I'm nearly 29!), and rarely drink any alcohol.

I think what I have is an intolerance. I know it's not an allergy, because no rash, swelling, breathing difficulty.
But a big problem if I drink; I have cried in agony before. That was once when I drank half a glass of beer.
Paraplegic since Sept 30th 2004 (spontaneous spinal extradural haematoma).

Hmmmmm.... It does sound like you might have developed an intolerance or something! Im not very good at drinking wine either. I get pickled quite quickly, :) then all I want to do is go to sleep! :) (mind you the alcohol level is quite high compared to other drinks!) and some wines give me a cronic guts ache! Usually the cheaper ones! :)

I have no problem with spirits but mostly I cant be bothered having more than one or two anyway. (I must be getting old!!!!) And I cant stand the taste of beer! :)

Lucy,

I have the same problem and have done for a long time. I think it is probably to do with the sitting which puts a little more pressure on the stomach. Anyway, you need a solution for this so head off to the doctor. You will probably just need some pills to slow down the production of stomach acid. Lasoprazole is the druug I take and it basically 'cures' the problem. I also have Gaviscon tablets in case it doesn't quite work.

Do get checked. Wine is significant in Jewish ceremonies isn't it, so make sure you don't miss out.

Well you know what they say, drinking effects the liver, and people in wheelchairs are most apt to have dizzy spells, sicky feeling frm alcohol, I am in the same boat.. I have'nt drank in so long now, I even had to go threw withdrawl, alcohol is a depressent, and a poison, I feel the government wants us all to drink and take other substance so that we are not thinking straight and are dependent on them, I feel they want us all to be addicted to something [precription],and legal stuff cigs, chew, stuff they put in food,ect... Anyways it may sound like im paranoid, well we all should be, The stuff in our food and drinks today are killing all of us, Why is it so hard to think healthy today? because they have made it so expensive to treat our bodies like temples.. sorry I may have gotten a little carried away, but Im a true beleiver of eating as well as I can.. I juice and also eat 1 clove of raw garlic a day, and I look and feel great. I'v been in my wheelchair sence 1982 para t-7-11, My son is now 20 and beleave the same... [Had him in 1986.. anyway buttom line the live will fail if you dont treat it right.. lilbit

hi all
I have a problem with alcohol consumption now Lucydog
I used to love red wine, beer etc but I can't drink anywhere near as much as before, it plays havoc with my bowels the following day [opposite of constipation] and I get a pain in my stomach
Sadly it was another of life's little pleasures I have hadto forego sometimes I have a 'don't give a damn attitude and drink too much, I pay for it afterwards though but what the hell you only live once
I'm not going to let a condition rule my life!
the trouble is that as we all knowwhen we're told we can't do something we are prone to do it pigheadedly to prove a point even if it harms us PUSH THE BARRIERS

Well, Dom, that's something I could do with when I drink alcohol! Everything nis hard and slow so something like that would be really handy. Alcohol doesn't cause me problems if I drink in moderation though so I suppose I should be greatful.

Lucydog,
I too have found that I really cannot drink alcohol anymore, you described the exact symptoms that I get when drinking beer even just one! I have drank vodka and tequila and my stomach seem to tolerate okay but it just didn't seem to be enjoyable to me anymore!
