How does one treat never-ending burning skin (pins and needles sensation) that doesn't entail taking more nasty, side-effect causing, exotic medications... rubs with lidocaine help a bit....

THC

The burning your getting is from the nerves.

When nerves regenerate below the level of injury they have nothing to learn from as to what there purpose is and scatter, hence the burning.

Example; I had a biracial plexus on the right side, this is when the nerves in the shoulder are severed to the arm, if all 3 major are severed the arm is useless, I had 2 severed, 1 remained intact, the other 2 regenerated, learnt there purpose from the 1 that remained intact and I got the use of the arm back although there is some increased tone.

THC is one way, orgasm for whatever reason is another that also relaxes spasm.

Regards

In near 32 years I've not found any creams or meds that work much, even meditation,, which is a daily practice, doesn't lessen the burning and tingling very much. After awhile I just got use to it, but there are days when all I want to do is scream, but I stay silent and grin and bare it :mfrlol: :wheelchair: Sorry I can't help more...

I agree with Jerry. Yes, the burning is from the nerves. You can take all the neurontin/Lyrica/whatever that the quacks suggest, but, unless you are sent to sleep by all the meds, you will feel it. My hands feel like they have been working, unprotected, with cement for too long. Constant burning. Nothing can be done about it. Just have to live with it. Sorry, but I have no answers, either.

Spot, quite the apt description, my legs n feet often feel like cement blocks. It's a very strange sensation, I often worry about pressure on the bottom of my feet, when my legs/feet get really bad I have my carers check them for any signs of redness/pressure sores, their okay most days, but my carers always comment on how cold my legs/feet are...just luv lack of circulation :)

The lack of circulation will cause pins n needles but the burning doesn't relate to circulation, this is a nerve issue with no medical recourse to resolve it.

Thanks for the responses.....Also, seems like the burning and spasticity get worse in rainy cold weather....I can now relate to my old Grandpa when he complained of the "rumitiz" when it rained...

I suffer from the burns on both arms from the elbow down 24/7. Lyrica + the occassional T3 helps or at least I pretend they do. I wish I never found this thread :)

Ugh -- I was coming to this thread and hoping there was some type of REMEDY... guess not. 14 years post and the last week and a half I have been on fire!!! Pain medication does not help, cream/spray doesn't work, the only thing that seems to work is me sleeping which I cannot do all day long.

Today has been better so far... just Tingling no burning! However for me (not sure if this goes for you guys) I have gotten more sensation in my back. Anytime I have this type of pain... I get movement or sensation back.

My movement in my legs/toes have become a lot stronger in the last week as well. Soooo I try not to complain too much! Just the pain sucks and is indescribable. My body is completely sore right now, feels like I worked out for an entire week 24/7. I don't want to load up on pain meds because I want to work out the muscles while my nerves are regenerating... but like you said Jerry... it is intense to where I just want to cry/scream!

My doctor confirmed this. The burning is indeed a nerve issue not poor circulation. He was honest enough to state nothing can be done for it. Just learn to ignore it. Simple mind over matter: "If you don't mind.... it don't matter."

Yes, I get that burning too mostly in my feet. I always said it feels like what frostbite must feel like. Numb but a cold burning feeling. My feet are always ice cold. My calves are completely numb too and they always ache all the way down even though they are numb. This feeling/not feeling never ceases to confuse everyone else. They can't understand how it hurts if they are numb. I get really tired of it sounding like I'm crazy :blushing02: .

I've had neuropathy in my feet for over a year now. The pain ranges from pins and needles, to feeling like I have glass stuck in the soles of my feet, to feeling like someone is holding a blowtorch to the bottom of them.

Lyrica helps some. When it gets really bad, lidocaine offers some relief. Vicodin might be the best treatment in terms of alleviating the pain, but that comes with its own risks.

In the end, I wouldn't recommend "just grinning and bearing it," as some might suggest. Lyrica/Gabapentin and vicodin is the route I would suggest to manage the pain.

It is mot the chair that takes me to my darkest places but living with this constant pain. I would gladly swap the remaining movement and sensation I have in my legs if it would put out the fire.

But its proved to more an issue of trading clarity of mind due to the effects of meds with acceptance of a certain level pain up to now. finding the balance that enables the best quality of life is now my focus.

The other night when my husband's toes were on "fire", I alternated putting an icepack and hot pack on his toes. Did this in two minute intervals--i.e. two minutes cold, two minutes hot. That made the burning go away, at least temporarily, until the lyrica and perocet could kick in. (I learned that trick from a therapist when I had some nerve irritation in my arm --nothing like what my husband is going through, of course, but it was worth a shot!)

We are fortunate to have a hot tub and pool in our backyard.

When his pressure sore is fully healed and we can get him into the pool, I'm curious to see if alternating between the heat of the spa and the coolness of the pool will help him.

Will let you know. We are still a few weeks away from that.

I say the same. I've had a burning like fire from the waist to the toes for over 20 yrs. You learn to deal. ]

Same here - the burning seems unbearable at times. The only relief I get is if I soak in a hot bath. The pain goes for a while but returns with twenty minutes. I'm trying Gabapentin at present as it was recommended by a forum member. I've been gradually increasing the dosage every month for the past nine months and am currently on 1000mg three times a day. It hasn't eased the pain at all so if there's no improvement when I reach 1200mg x 3 I'm giving up. I hate taking meds anyway because of side effects and it's definitely not worth it if they don't work.

My nerve pain feels like I'm stuck in ice. I'm taking 600mg of gabapentin. The best relief for is is having someone rub the area that's 'frozen'. It provides almost immediate relief. I also use a couple drops of caraway essential oil to rub into the area. The oil just takes the edge off but sometimes that's the relief I need or all I can get.
