Hi, I am very small and thin and over the past year and a half that I have been paralyzed I have lost it all. How on earth do you gain weight and have it not all go to the stomach or something?
Because of the cancer and complications I have my first pressure sore that has me layed up for as we know who knows how long and Ive only been paralyzed a year and a half so this scares me. I know this is probably much more of a doctor/specialist question but didnt know if any of you would have already dealt with this. Thanks SO much!!

Hi libertyrebekah & welcome. I've just read your other topic about boredom on bed rest. Well you're in the best position to gain weight. Take your recovery time to eat a high protein/carb diet. Fill your bedside cabinet with all the high fat junk food that you love. DVD watching & comfort food (well you're 'doin bedrest!) will cover your bones with fat, over a long period. And that is long after you've kissed goodbye, your flat belly. A fat belly is the least of your problems. If you don't get your sore healed, & tissue regrowth back to being flush with the outside rim of your sore, it will be a life long problem. What stage is it at? Have you seen a skin care specialist? A skin flap op may be suggested.
Sorry, I didn't know which topic of yours to reply to, but trust me, you must gain fat.

but sugar is the worst thing u can do for healing, your sugar levels will actually elevate with a sore, definitely see a wound care dr./facility if its getting bad......anything beyond superficial...........lots of protein, peanuts, peanut butter, tuna.......eggs........zinc...........

No disrespect airart1, but raised sugar levels while lying down, opposed to an op, or death?

i was talking about loading up on junk food, like hunnybuns or stuff like that, need proteins, and vitamins, good for u food...a sore is what will elevate your sugar levels........high fat junk food is not the answer....no disrespect..............lying down has nothing to do with it, other than staying off the sore so it will heal..........

I also just had radiation for brain cancer so Im always hungry and yea youre right Im just gonna have to eat and eat which is no problem! I should have mentioned Im vegan so its easier to find healthy food that has fat rather just bad food so I have to get on it! Im not worried about my flat stomach just wondering if I eat and eat it will all go there and not the places I need it but every body is different..just wasnt sure if any advice or magic, haha. I just did see the wound care and basically told her not to tell me any details as I do my husband because Ill just worry myself sick but he's the one taking care of everything. Its nowhere near a flap though yet thank God. So thanks so much for the help!

my ski instructor was a vegan and had horrible shoulder pain due to an injury that just wouldn't heal. he finally got better when he added meat to his diet. he didn't heal because he was lacking protein that meat provided.

hi fellow gimps! i'm a c 6/7 quad and have been injured since 1986. i was in a roll over hydroplane accident and it took hours for the paramedics to get me out of the car in the pouring rain. that definately wasn't my day. but alas life goes on!

Foods to Avoid while Gaining Weight:

Foods that may produce a lot of gas.
Foods high in soluble fiber: beans, oats
Carbonated drinks, like beer
Foods, high in fructose or sorbitol (especially in those with fructose malabsorption): honey, apples, pears, peaches, plums and prunes, dried fruits in general, ‘diet soda’ and other ‘low calorie’ foods sweetened by sorbitol.

Good luck with your weight gain.

Im pretty good with sugar, and try to be healthy, but I have never heard about the surgar levels elevating and Ill have to look into that. I should have mentioned Im vegan so no animal products which cuts off all that horrible junk food anyway. I have to remember more of the nuts, so thanks for reminding me, they are so good for you and I always forget about those little buggers. Im seeing a wound clinic too because unfortunatly it is beyond superficial, ugh. Thanks SO much for the advice!

Yea, there are alot of vegans who dont eat the way they really should for protein and nutrients in general. You can be perfectly healthy if you do it the right way though so I always think its unfortunate when vegans just start eating meat instead of doing it the right way but its not for everyone. Thanks for the heads up though!

I dont drink beer luckily and I avoid diet soda and only occasionally treat myself to a natural soda but skip Coke and all that horribleness. As for the fruit I know its high in sugar and I try to avoid much sugar just because its bad in general but I didnt know about the sugar or the sorbitol part but isnt it better with the nutrition of some of those fruits to eat them than to avoid them all together because of it?
Thanks so much!

I think these fruits are to be avoided, if you are fructose malabsorption intolerant. If you eat fruit regularly, with no side effects, go for gold.

Just another thought...Holding onto what you've eaten ie, doing your bowel routine no more than once every 3 days, if you can, will help you gain fat faster. Too much fruit may make you a little regular  god forbid!
