Hi all! My family and I are traveling to Amsterdam the end of this month (spur of the moment). Does ANYONE know where I can rent a power chair for 2 weeks? We will also be leaving the country to go to France for a couple days... any ideas for that as well? Thanks everyone! You can email me at brybrds@aol.com

Make it a good one!

Best regards,
B :(

I'm not a powerchair user so maybe not in the best place to comment but my advice would be to take your own powerchair with you. Airlines should transport it free of charge.

I agree with Russ, it's too much hassle to rent abroad so as a former power chair user I always took it with me & the airlines were fine (free) to carry it for me. I used to be able to 'wheel' right to the plane doors with it then I would transfer & then they would take it away in the hold (once I'd put it into freewheel mode) & if all went well it would be waiting at the other end with xx delay. The only thing I ensured was to take off the joystick/control unit & hand carry it as it could easily get damaged.

If you really want to rent then I think it would still be best in your country & return it after the holiday but I never had any hassle or at least no more than my manual chair.

Yes, take your powerchair with you. Lots of our clients come in power chairs, airlines are pretty good with them now, providing they have gel batteries (as most modern ones do) you be okay. Important though to insure the chair against damage. Should be far easier to get money from an insurance policy if it gets damaged/lost than from an airline. Only had one client experience damage during a flight, happened at Gatwick when the ground crew dropped his chair from the plane onto the tarmac! Knackered a motor, which the airline did promptly pay for.
If you found a hire company you may be looking at 20€/day (£14), this is nearly 200 quid for 2 weeks! This is the kind of money someone here wants for a powered chair hire.

Hi There

I live in France and agree with everyone else - Take your own.

You cannot hire power chairs here at all in Fance because of the public liability and 3rd party liability insurance regulations - it is far simpler to bring your own, if you want or need a manual chair then hire one at your destination which is what I recommend for my customers coming to France.

Alternatively the airline will let you take two chairs, but at a price! A customer who is coming to us during the summer had the same quandry and the airline wanted to charge her an extra £30.00 :) for two wheelchairs, we could hire her one for £20.00 for the fortnight - SORTED!!
