Hi all

Just wondering how often you replace your wheelchairs? My current chair is 3 1/2 years old and groaning and creaking?....I would have thought it should last a lot longer...

Thanks in advance

Karen

Whenever insurance dictates I'm afraid! Still loving my chair (not the back though). Maybe they will let me get a new back before I have to get a new chair? Oh, I've only had this chair about 6-8 months so it is still great!

Yes, Ches, that is me. You've got one too right? I love the chair. It's just that the back is too high and I wish it was lower. Even with that though, I love the chair.

1st chair . . . 18 months! (as a 14yo, with sporty friends, we just killed it)

2nd chair . . . 5 years

3rd chair . . . 6 years (donated it to someone and it's still in use today)

4th chair . . . 22 years! (and this despite travelling to 11 countries, and countless flights)

1st powerchair . . . 5 years

2nd powerchair . . . 12 years (and still using the original batteries)

In Canada you get a new chair every 5 years, and a new seat/back every 2 years.
I'm due for new seat/back. If you have private insurance maybe sooner?

Karen.

How's life treating ya?

I'm 18 years in the chair, been through a :wink05: load of chairs, quickie, rgk to name but a few, on average(depending on the battering) 3 to 5 years is the norm to get out of a chair.

The last 4 chairs came from a friend of mine, he will do a run down to Dublin(he's there more often than not).

I still have 3 of them(All from himself)

http://www.mobility-vision.com/
http://www.activatorwheelchairs.com/

I have the motion and http://www.futurechairsltd.co.uk with the front folding hinge that James holds the patent on.
The carbon fibre that Marcus builds can be gotten through James also, he is just up the road from you in Castleblaney.

Marcus use to be a formula one engineer with BMW until he created a chair for Frank Williams who owned the F1 team at the time, he liked it and that set Marcus on the road to where he is now(Tied up with cyclone).

If your checking out the links above(The activator looks better than the picture shows)
Contact James on 087.......PM Karen if you want his mobile number.
James will offer a superb customer service and his chairs are strong, light weight and stylish.

Had this chair since 1985 .... a Quickie II ... sounds like it needs to be changed but over here we have to pay for the majority of the cost of our chairs. It still works well, and has had plenty of parts over its life. I'm sure it could do with a bit of tuning though.

It's the best chair I've ever had. I wish I bought two!

Bob Hall come back-you made the best chairs-fits like a glove and I can push it all day and never get tired. It looks cool too!

It depends on the chair and the wear and tear. One chair had to be replaced after 6 months. One lasted 4 years.

My current chair was ready to be replaced after three years, but I don't have the money to replace it, so I'm stuck with it for now.

Hi :-)

That's 1 thing I was wondering about..Are chairs a bit like cars....get changed just to upgrade for a later model or out of necessity ?? or if you get a good chair and stay the same-ish weight can they last for ages...I think I've just been really unlucky..:-)

2005 The chair I got in rehab was totally wrong for me...after about 12 visits and readjustments and no major improvement to make it anywhere near comfortable..I bought wheelchair no 2 with my own money..

2005 Great chair...then in 2007 the PT and I etc decided that I needed some support with a curved back as I tend to lean to the left all the time..

2008 Chair ordered (again from rehab) for back support arrived...with an ordinary straight back...a couple of alternatives tried with no success..and the boss who had measured me up refused to speak to me ...

2010 ...Still in the same chair......very, very, very long story.....but not happy...

Gonna give John's guys a ring......

It is so good to hear that people have several chairs at the same time; one for this; one for that.

I am still in my original Quickie GPSA and it has been six years. It is still in pretty good condition for an in-the-house chair. My health plan provides maintenance; so anytime something is wrong, I can call them and they come to my house to fix/maintain my chair.

Now I am considering buying an outdoor chair (to run on sidewalks). I will pay for this one myself so that I can swap wheels, tires, etc.

hi fellow gimps! i'm a c 6/7 quad and have been injured since 1986. i was in a roll over hydroplane accident and it took hours for the paramedics to get me out of the car in the pouring rain. that definately wasn't my day. but alas life goes on!

Is the creaking and groaning coming from your wheels? Maybe it's the spokes. If so, maybe they just need to be tightened or adjusted.

By the way, I get a new chair every 5 years or so.
