Can anybody out there tell me if you can insure a powerchair or/and an ordinary push wheelchair. Would it come under your household insurance or would it be like insuring a car. My son's wheelchair is presently with him in the hospital so how do I get around this one. I would hate for anything to happen to it as it is worth a lot of money and I could not afford to replace it.

I had to check this before going to Dublin last year. It ought to be covered by the household insurabce; at least my household insurance covered mine. However, it might be worth seeing if a broker could do insurance especially for it if it is expensive. Check out www.spinal.co.uk for suitable insurance brokers

My household insurance (a pretty expensive and comprehensive policy) only cover wheelchairs upto an amount I forget but which was much lower than the value of my titanium chair, they wanted a fortune to cover it for it's full value.

Fish Insurance do decent wheelchair policies although if you're looking at a power chair some of the policies covering mobility scooters from the major companies can be used, policies for power chairs / mobility scooters often also provide breakdown cover which might be an added bonus.

I've got my manual titanium chair insured on my house insurance with barcleys bank(uk). It's valued at £3k and if memory serves me I'll get a good payeout should the unthinkable happen . I think its also insured for outdoor claims as it's an item used both inside/outside use like a mobile phone, so if it breaks while I'm outside I'm covered.

I'll check my policy and get back to you!
