I know this is an old thread but can never get to much advise on this subject. With my lower level injury and I am able to walk fine, I have the opposite problem where as my gas just comes out whenever it wants to. Very embarrasing! And nothing seems to work. I believe that I have this dibilitaing issue because I have a "Flacid" bowel. I can go a month or so and be able to eat whatever with no effects and then all of a sudden, i have enough gas to fill a hotair ballon. Seems like i toot every 5 mins and it lasts for a month or so. It interfears with my work big time and guy time at the shop and dating. It also caused a lot of problems with my marriage. Anyone else want to admit to this problem? Come on, i know it wasn't the dog! lol

So which "F" caused the issue in your marriage,,,,,,,, I was unable to determine if it was a "Flacid" or "Flatulence" problem.

Go figure!!!
Seemingly, "support" is very "serious" and you should never have a thought of your own..... My Blog

OK I know what you mean Al I have CES L4/5 & S1 and yes it is one of the more distressing sides of having a flaccid bowel, the inability to control emissions is well documented. I guess there are many on here who would be glad to trade off the ability to walk (in my case with splints and crutches over short distances) for the continual and uncontrolable wind :blushing02:

On the other hand, the alternative to liberal venting of wind (constant internal gas pain) is quite distresing as well..One has to find a happy medium.. :head_brick_wall-1:

Hey Dom, sounds like we are in the same boat. I'm thinking that it's because of the lower sci injury. I know we should be happy that we are walking and not complain but it's our own issues that we ourselves have to live with. And since we are walking, it's hard to explain why we have these problems and none expects it. This issue has caused me more problems and discomfort than anything else. Here i go whinning again when i should be happy that I am able to walk. I would just really like to find a solution to this.

There is hope: Upon reaching a certain age you will no longer be embarrassed about cutting loose in public..Old folks fart all the time and never worry about it..My old granny had the walking farts so bad us kids would fight over who got to walk her to the door. She sounded like a cheap Japanese motorcycle....Until then, laugh it off...Nothing you can do about it and if others respond by turning up their noses then I'd recomend cutting back on your consumption of eggs or vitamins that contain iron..wheew..

This may sound crazy, but I promise you it helps. Go to the grocery store and where they sell spices, buy Fennel seed. You pour out a small handful and chew them. They kind of have a licorice flavor. You don't even have to swallow the seeds, but just chew on them for awhile and get the juices out of them. I have 6 children, and this helps all of us! You will get gas relief in minutes!!

I love the candy coated fennel seeds that are really popular at Indian restaurants. I found an Indian grocery store to order them. you'll find a really good description about the gaastrointestinal health benefits of fennel seeds there, even about gas.

Fennel Seeds (Sugar Coated).

Fennel Seeds (Roasted).Fennel seeds split into two, one sometimes remaining on the stalk. They are 4 -8 mm (1/8 - 5/16 in) long, thin and curved, with colour varying from brown to light green (the green being superior).

Bouquet: warm, sweet and aromatic. Flavour: similar to a mild anise.

The major constituents of Fennel, which include the terpenoid anethole, are found in the volatile oil. Anethole and other terpenoids inhibit spasms in smooth muscles, such as those in the intestinal tract, and this is thought to contribute to fennel’s use as a carminative (gas-relieving and gastrointestinal tract cramp-relieving agent).

Related compounds to anethole may have mild estrogenic actions, although this has not been proven in humans.

Fennel is also thought to possess diuretic (increase in urine production), choleretic (increase in production of bile), pain-reducing, fever-reducing, and anti-microbial actions.

The Fennel seeds are used as a flavoring agent in many herbal medicines, and to help disperse flatulence. The seeds, and roots, also help to open obstructions of the liver, spleen & gall bladder, and to ease painful swellings, in addition to helping with yellow jaundice, the gout and occasional cramps.

I'm having such a problem with gas & bloating that I've been doing a lot of research. Much of it ends up in IBS territory; yet, I know as Spinal Cord Injured we have a lot of other GI tract issues.

I am a C5/6 quad post injury 25 years. I never had any gas problems before, but in the past year my whole bowel maintainance routine went crazy. My quality of life has been seriously impaired because:

1) often I feel like I need to have a bowel movement at least 2-3 times a day

2) I become so bloated I can't fit in my pants; or drive because my belly rubs against the steering wheel

3) I have so much gas my saliva is frothy; I snort it through my nose; belch all of the time; have autonomic dysreflexia and increased spasms in my legs; and am uncomfortable and embarrassed

4) my bowel routine takes up to four hours because the poop stays high up in the colon and won't come down unless I put in a few suppositories and lots of digital stimulation.

5) Often I have anal leakage after i get in my wheelchair.

6) My stools have been soft or diarrhea for almost a year now.

7) I sweat a lot with the dysrelexia; but now my sweat has an unpleasant odor.

I've been to several doctors and had all of the exams - colonoscopy, endoscopy, ultrasounds, blood tests - and all the tests confirm that I have a healthy colon.

However, there are days when I feel great lasting up to a week; but then the nightmare returns. I can't suffer like this anymore. Physically, I'm a mess. My life is very isolated now. I've had to quit working and I barely leave my home.

I am very careful with my diet. UI was gluten/dairy free for about 8 months. I take probiotics, organic cider vinegar, soluble fiber, aloe vera, other supplements to compliment digestive disorders and vitamins. I've trued prescription acid reflux and gas-x meds. Still I suffer.

Does anybody have any advice or direction for me to follow?

Fennel Tea

I just read about this fennel tea and was considering giving it a try for gas and bloating.

Heather's Tummy Fennel Tea

The web site offers lots of information about the herb's benefits.

Soluble Fiber Supplements

Anybody have experience with adding soluble fiber to their diet?

I'm trying this organic acacia prebiotic powder now. I;'ve been taking it for about a week and haven't noticed much of of a change. But, I'm starting slow with about 6 grams a day. The recommended daily dosage is 25-35 grams.

Here's a description of the product - again this is an IBS product sold on the Heather's IBS site. If anything the web site is full of digestive information.

just read this old thread and tried the gas x but it doesnt really work i have read another remedy

Limit yourself when eating gas causing foods (see page 3 for list)
Try eating cumin, coriander, or caraway because these spices have been reported to counteract the production of intestinal gas.
Take an over-the-counter, anti-gas medication.
Add or increase your probiotic intake to help reduce flatulence by restoring balance to the normal intestinal flora.

it is because of the non existent anal sphincter muscle and flaccid bowel when i get up i generally pass wind and when i hobble around, or even when i turn over in bed

I do my best to avoid foods that I know give me wind (baked beans being a major culprit), and thankfully it's mostly kept at a tolerable level because i'm one of those that can't control it. It was worse when I was walking, and I lived in constant fear of it happening at really inopportune moments, like in a lift, in a quiet office with my boss/colleagues (well, anywhere quiet to be honest - sod's law dictates that it'll never happen in a noisy environment, only when everyone can clearly hear it and knows it's you!) because I never have any clue it's going to happen until it's already happened! Whether it escapes freely or gets trapped inside, it's a pain in the ar$e for sure!
