Hey y'all, I was thinking about my "bucket list" and I'm actually getting things done... I was wondering if anybody knew of a place that adapts motorcycles for high quadriplegic??? Yep -- I wanna be a biker chick :H2kOther (26):

Do you want to ride, or do you want to drive? ;)

I want to ride! Even if it's in one of those sidecars... going around in circles in a parking lot... just something :H2kOther (26):

Angel,

This sounds possible. Why not call your local harley and Honda dealers and ask if you can put a note on their bulletin board, or whatever way club members communicate with each other. Explain who you are and what you want and someone might well invite you on a picnic. Lots of beer and b-b-q.

ang,

s & w winger runs a blog and a forum for bikers. she is getting her bike set up so i bet she could help you find a way to achieve this. the local bikers in your area are a great start as well.

i got to ride on the back harley. we used bungee cords. i was scared due to my lack of trunk muscles. i held on for dear life and really enjoyed the ride. i'm glad i did it. i can understand in your case ang that a sidecar may work better. maybe you can try a ride in one first before you go the path of alterations. the best thing would be if you could find a modified rig and check it out to see what suits you and how much you like your ride.

hi fellow gimps! i'm a c 6/7 quad and have been injured since 1986. i was in a roll over hydroplane accident and it took hours for the paramedics to get me out of the car in the pouring rain. that definately wasn't my day. but alas life goes on!

thanks for the info, I'll check out her blog!

Õ I have had these talks with my biker friends before and they have talked about using bungee cords and duct tape to get me on the back of their Harleys (obviously they were intoxicated lol). I would definitely have to get a sidecar in order for me to feel 100% safe! I don't even own a bike so there is no alterations to do just yet.

Would be nice to have a bike with "heels with wheels" logo :)

so jealous of you mellow!

Air -- that is so awesome! Damn I wish I wasn't such a high quad sometimes :(

I dunno about adapting bikes but I've ridden on the backs for friends' crotch rocket bikes (Suzukis and such) and we made some velcro straps to keep my feet on the pedals that would rip off in case of a crash and then I just hung on to them for dear life, literally. So I was thinking, instead of you hanging on like a monkey on their back with your arms (which is what I did haha), you just strap yourself to them somehow that is safe? I dunno.... just some ideas. I think maybe you'd be safer on a more cruising type bike than a racing bike for sure, somthing like one of those big comfy Harleys. And always wear the full protective gear, full face helmet and all that. There are lots of peeps on this forum who have been hurt in motorcycle accidents and can attest to the need for safety. I gotta say riding on the back of a bike as a para is a little spooky. I enjoy it but I find it to feel so vulnerable and it throws me way out of my comfort zone cuz as a passenger, I'm essentially putting my life into someone else's hands. Intense! <# (haha love you ang!)

Edited: Oh and we had to be really careful that I didn't burn my leg on the exhaust pipe. Apparently that thing gets super hot and it's right by the passengers legs on the bikes I've ridden on. Put on those protective pants!

Angela,

I do think a sidecar would be better. And full protective gear, like TO said, absolutely. My husband had a motorbike accident years ago, so I know how important that is.

That being said - all the warning done - have FUN!!!

if u just want to ride and not drive, sure just get a bike with a sidecar and have at it, get you a trustworthy driver and go, my mom and dad rode one till he died in '06 from cancer and they rode everywhere for 20 years......

You could modify it so you could drive from the sidecar

Actually it's pretty simple. Just move the throttle and brake cables to the sidecar and that just leaves the problem of steering. Well that's easily remedied by a couple of beval gears. Simple.

Personally, I'd prefer the trike option tough. Just looks cleaner when it's done

Haha Mimi -- I don't want to Ride a crotch rocket -- I want to ride a Harley!!! I would totally be geared up before doing any type of "riding" definitely going to have to do a sidecar because strapping myself to someone on the back of a motorcycle is just not my cup of tea lol. <#

Like those pics Air... I would totally be more comfortable in something like that... like I said before going around in circles in a parking lot would be fine with me lol. Now my biker Boyz might have a problem with that. I will show them these pics of the sidecar!

now that one is similar to the one guys i knew that had a steering wheel instead of handlebars, he also used a hondamatic 750 bike, they're rare but still around, it was kinda slow, because of the electric chair and he was rather a big guy, but he putted around about anywhere he wanted to go.....

Try looking at Nippi (http://www.nippi.co.uk/). It's a design based on a scooter that has been made into a trike with a ramp that allows access and then you drive from your chair. There is a larger one built by Martin Conquest (http://www.conquest-international.com/).

For anyone who is a Para, then a solo motorcycle is no problem. I am T4 complete and ride a variety of bikes.

Best of luck. Get out there and do it.
