Hi
Do you take out extra wheelchair insurance to cover damage to your chair when flying, or would it be covered by ordinary travel insurance? Am I covered by the airlines own liability for instance?
Any tip welcome as Im new to this.
thanks

hi fellow gimps! i'm a c 6/7 quad and have been injured since 1986. i was in a roll over hydroplane accident and it took hours for the paramedics to get me out of the car in the pouring rain. that definately wasn't my day. but alas life goes on!

Never thought of taking out extra insurance for chair, I suppose I am under the impression that if anything happened to it that the airline in question would be responsible. Suppose the next time I am travelling I will check the small print on insurance cover. Thanks for bringing this to my attention LucyDog.

I insured my chair as part of the structure and contents insurance on my home. There's a special clause in the contract that says it's insured wherever I am, at home or not, in Dusseldorf or abroad. It cost an extra €40 per year. The chair is insured for up to its re-purchase value of €4000.
Insurance is a bit of a controversial subject for me. I've had a lot of negative experiences with health insurance refusing to pay for things, and travel insurance looking for reasons not to pay for things. I feel like I'm forced to pay for nothing sometimes. However, the knowledge that it can happen and how stuck I'd be if it did...

You could have a look at Fish Insurance. I use Fish for my Employers Liability Insurance but I've never had cause to use the policy so I can't tell you personally what they're like as a company unfortunately. My old social worker though told me they were very good though.
I have my two chairs on my home contents insurance, which I think covers damage/theft which could occur in or out of home, I'm not sure if it's covered for travel abroad though. If they were any claim would put the premium up on any home insurance policy. I'm considering removing my chair's from my home insurance at the next renewal and taking out a separate policy, hopefully receiving a better lower premium for my home insurance and a fixed rate for covering my two wheelchairs.
Hope this helps
