Hi there, thanks for reading my post...

I'm really interested in what hand controls are best and if it is possible for me to drive a manual car again safely and quickly?

since boshing my back have done a few trackdays in my car with the standard push pull handcontrols, however i'd really like to be able to keep both hands on the steering wheel and still have full control of the brakes and throttle... does anyone on here race cars and if so what set up do you use.

any help will be greatly appreciated.

cheers,
Johnny

check the videos on my sons website under the media section. He races a couple of different kinds of cars. We built the controls in our stock car ourselves. It is a 2 hands on the steering wheel system, you push on the wheel to apply the brakes and pull a cable operated throttle ring to accelerate. It's a dog ring transmission which allows for clutchless shifts and in circle track racing you only shift once to get up to speed. The clutch is a lever located beside him just for intial take off.

The off road truck uses a push/pull everyday type of control with a hydralic clutch lever and shif buttons to operate the 4 speed "H" pattern transmission. A much more complicated and difficult set up.

Flappy paddle gearbox with a centre ring accelerator is what I have - still have to take hand off to brake but it's a standard conversion and works pretty well. Having said that the cars computer is way better than me at changing gear :)

What sorta car do you have, gearbox type etc?

The Super Touring Car I'm currently rebuilding to race professionally isnt all one system, bit of a mixture..
The clutch system is built by AP Racing, the way I control it is via a paddle on the back of the steering wheel much like the ones used in F1.
this is the clutch unit:

To shift up a gear i still do myself manually, just by pulling back on the gear lever. The car uses a 6sp sequential gearbox made by XTRAC, so just like a motorcycle you pull back to shift up, push forward to shift down. The clutch is only needed to pull away from a stop or come to a complete stop.
Shifting down is done via another system built by Shiftec. Basically because I have one hand on the brake lever and the other on the steering wheel, theres no more hands to shift down. I dont have any issue taking the hand off the wheel to brake as the car has power steering in anycase. not to mention its near impossible to turn without powersteering and still using 2 hands. (lock to lock is only 1-1.5 turns)
What happens is the following when i want to downshift, say braking hard into a corner:

1: Button on the steering wheel is depressed to activate downshift (button needs to be pressed for each shift. so to downshift from 4th gear to 2nd gear would require me to push it twice etc)
2: Shiftec engine cut signal is then sent to the Motec ecu
3: Gear actuator then forces the gear linkage forward to go down 1 gear
4: Throttle is blipped to line up dog rings in gearbox (happens basically at the same time as #3)
5: signal then sent back to the Motec ecu that shift has been performed
6: clutch is re-engaged.

All of this happens in exactly the same time it would take an able bodied person to perform a downshift by hitting the lever forward each time...

The system can do upshifts as well, but i dont use that function because A: I like the fact that I can still do that, and B: the class of racing that the car takes part in doesnt allow automated shift systems, but they've given me permission to have it for obvious reasons as long as it can only downshift.

The throttle ring im still working on and looking at what others hav used for ideas.. The car doesnt use a fly by wire system, which is fine, but what makes it tricky is the steering wheel needs to be removed to get in/out the car, even for an able bod as it sits that close to you..... so yeah I'll hopefully sort that out soon, but been far too busy with work to even look at the race car.

Glad to see you having fun out on the track ;)

not sure on brake ring but unless you plan to race it the cost would far outweigh any benefit

interesting read!! good to see an hear of other ideas..

i had a mitsubishi lancer evo 7 ,built into a full on race car . just putting a new norris designs engine in rated too 1000bhp!!
but with the turbo im using it will only be around 700bhp..running with a PPG group n dogbox(recently broke my drength dogbox lol)

hand controls i use normal push an pull, then added to the controls is a trigger for the electric clutch system..i have also had a proshift ps3 set up fitted.
this gives gearchanges on buttons on the steering wheel.which changes gear via the ikeya sequential shifter.it includes flat shift (clutchless up shift)and a throttle blip for clutchless down shifts..
