First sarcasm is my favorite weapon when dealing with ignorance. I'd have told her my legs isn't the reason I don't want to wake up.. It's the golden bars I :censored: every night that's tempting... I've been in my chair for 4yrs and I've come to the conclusion that it's not the chair that brings the stupid questions. It's the sad fact that 75% of the people around you are just that clueless...

I felt like saying well F%$# if I didn't wake up, I wouldn't be walking either way.... Why do I always think of these things AFTER the fact?? ;)
My wheelchair does not define me, I define it.

So, yesterday I was shopping with my mom and this lady is looking at me all funny, I ignore her then out of nowhere she says "you been in the chair long?" and I'm like yeah, all my life and she's like "oh so you never knew anything different (insert sad tone here)" and I'm like no.... and then she says "so, when you dream do you have a chair?" By this time I'm getting kind of pissed and so I rolling away and saying not usually and she says "so I bet you wish you wouldn't wake up?" Now by this time I'm JUST PISSED and I was like I'm good on waking up thanks and she's like "Oh my husband is in a chair." I rolled away like wtf? I realize people are curious but for one, if your husband is in a chair so you should know how to act and for two that's not even a normal line of question plus it was an employee of the store! Am I wrong to be kind of upset?
She certainly didn't approach you in the right way. She is probably trying to find out if her husband is OK. I bet he dreams without a chair and doesn't wish to wake up. Maybe her husband is depressed. It would have gone better if she had started out with, "My husband is in a chair, mind if I ask a few questions?"

Funny you should mention the post office...I worked there for three years, '87-'90, at the height of the "going postal" era...though I got along fine with all the carriers, I left when the other supervisor's tires were slashed...someone may have mistaken my car...yada yada...in the meantime, I was always the one at risk to go postal! oh, of course, with "justification...!" And like I posted, I went off my head at that nurse that patted mine...and would gladly do so again...the only people to whom I must always be nice are my CNA's...no matter how inept, lacking common sense, or just plain stupid, I must be kind and patient...DRIVES ME CRAZY!!!!!! oh OOPS! let me rephrase that...oh, the poor dears do not know right from left...must've had a bad childhood...poor thing cannot speak English properly, I'll help her: here dear, let me get up and put myself in the wheelchair with the Hoyer lift...I'll also...oh OOPS... :thread jacked:

...back to the OP...let me at 'em!! I feel like a good fight today!! OH OOPS! Sorry, I forgot, let's kill 'em with kindness and understanding...we'll be the bigger people and allow their transgressions... and the use of humor! Never to be taken too lightly! Apply with a quick brush stroke and it will diffuse most situations...

F@#%k that today! I'm going out looking for trouble now!! WoF ya go me all riled up and ready for a fight! Let's go out brawling with those AB's!
:swordfight: :ranting: :boxing:

Oh dear God, Beverly Beverly, but your country was built off the blood, sweat and tears of these non nationals you speak of, not to mention your second amendment rights, then again we Irish like to deal with things face to face and head on, sure if we had the right to bare arms, the island of Ireland would be derelict as we are a crazier bunch of :censored:

The only true "nationals" here were swept away via genocide masking as "manifest destiny." If the smallpox didn't get 'em, the firestick would...so if tribes of people cannot stay within their boundaries, how could we expect an individual to honor personal ones?? The political is the personal, the personal is the political...if your tribe, with heavier artillery decides it wants my little hill, then, poof! there it goes...so if some stranger decides they want to ask personal questions, unless you are strong enough to counter their offensive, you are a sitting duck...moral: be strong! be on guard...be prepared...scouts honor...peace...Love and happiness...ah back to my hippy days...so glad we have the Castle Doctrine here in Floriduh...

Nationals that were given the choice to fight in the Korean war or be sent back home, psychologically dismembered, and then there were the young men who died horrible deaths at the hand of the VC, drug educed experiments who entered dens killing all in sundry at the time of your hippy days, are these the nationals you speak of?

I won’t mention Atomic experiments in which a surrendered nation suffered.

A mere simple question, does this deserve the retribution of such a nation of those who hold themselves well above their station, irrelevant as to how innocent it is?

Castles are best placed where they belong…….History, and for school tours.

OK, bud, you're all over the place in History and point...maybe we should take this outside...OH, nevermind, it's 95 degrees...almost as hot as those blasts from Hiro and Naga...and Three Mile Island...amd now we have the Black Tide descending...all in the name of greed...this entire Nation is based upon greed and self-interest...who but the "founding fathers" did not wish to pay taxes and thus began centuries of exploitation...but that imperialism begins so much further back...when the one with the bigger club learned to wield it...so, I stand firm on my ground of strength in the face of adversity...fight to the Death...I'll tear 'em limb from limb, let me at 'em...if I only had a brain...there's no place like home, there's no place like home...Auntie Em, Auntie Em!

My dearest Dorothy,

My positioning is merely due to having so much choice at hand and I'm all a tizzy, much like a child in a sweet shop . I thank your government, past and present.

I shall refrain from the middle east for now as I know who will jump right in :wink05:

Dealing w/it has done an Elvis so he's out, you never know they are probably sitting by the beach waiting to be served cocktails by he who was black but now prefers white,, Americans ha, smoke screens and mirrors!

Founding fathers ha, giddy up horsey the red coats are coming, sure it's ok the French will save us.

Taxes you say, yep, a true American heading up the state knows all about taxes.. and no he took no steriods

Mere twaddle tiz to find offence within curiosity of others or concern of the uneducated within the world of SCI….tut tut

After reading your posts, I had to share a story about attitude, even though I am a mere spouse...

Way back when, my folks and I had taken my grandmother to Disneyland. She was old, really old. (lol) She also had COPD and the walking was right away going to be too rough on her, so my dad rented a wheelchair for her. Well, she wanted no part of that! She griped and complained. She toddled along slowly and we took turns pushing the empty wheelchair beside her which of course only made her chin go higher and and her eyes pointing in the opposite direction.

Then my father decided to ride for awhile. Later, I took a turn, apparently long enough to wear her down. She finally gave in and sat in it herself, grumbling about it and twisting her face up into all sorts of lovely, pinched attractiveness.

Lo and behold, we discovered that wheelchairs could go to the front of the long lines to get on the rides! Once she discovered that, it was like a plastic surgeon had just done miracles on her face. She happily used it for the rest of the day and seemed to have a better attitude about chairs ever since (God rest her feisty soul).

Now, don't get all hard on me about sharing a story about people who could just get up as they wanted to, that wasn't the point of the story.

Her attitude was the point and I get annoyed for how some people react to my husband when we are out and about. People just don't seem to have a natural inclination to educate themselves, like hearing 60 seconds of a newstory and spouting to their friends like they are suddenly an authority on the subject. Wheelchairs to us are like a pair of prescription glasses, (but people even have strange reactions if they see someone with really thick lenses), we don't care, we don't think about it until someone brings it to our attention. And then we have to laugh---People are stupid. If they want to get out of the way, more room for us. If they want to say something stupid, or act weird, it just gives us something to laugh about while we are feeling sorry for them.

McWriter, I really like your prescription glasses analogy! Excellent!

Maybe we could expand the thread into a whole new direction with metaphor...? Oh wait, I suppose it is already an allegory, isn't??

Oh, and we allknow about the wheelchairs first thing...why do you think we all chose this Life??? :mfrlol:
