I need a new laptop soon. Right now I have an adorable Pink Sony Vaio named Pinky. Unfortunately Pinky has had some ups and downs the past few years, and he just isn't doing too well. He overheats easily and shuts down, freezes at the worst times, and has had to do a whole system restore twice. I've been using a cooling pad, but since it is a laptop, I would like to take it out into the other rooms without having to carry an extra couple pounds. I know you need to have a laptop on a flat surface most of the time so that it can get air to circulate through it and so that the fan can work properly, but sometimes I have it on my stomach or on my lap, and it can't circulate.

What laptop do you use? Does it work good for you?

Or you can give me some ideas to help a girl out :)

Hey Beautiful,
I recently bought a little acer emachine. its small so when i lie in bed its great, very light. Was cheap too!!
Though it doesn't have a dvd burner or cd player.
But I find it does the job for surfing the net and being on this Forum.
It also has a built in webcam ,I use it for skype.

Hope this may help you.

Beautiful,

I've got an acer (laptop) and an hp (a small new one - netbook?), too. The acer is aging and starts breaking down. The hp is fine. BTW: somebody mentioned somewhere on this forum that it's a good idea to use one of these small foldable breakfast tables which you can use in bed or on the sofa. The air can circulate under the laptop, and you won't get burns from the heat.

Good luck with buying a new one!

Brad, sounds like you bought a netbook, the acer you got I take it has a 10.1 screen, 1 GB of ram with a 160 HDD with a 1.66 Ghz CPU, not a bad little system for browsing the net.

Acer machines are normally trouble free, their time lines are neat, Compaq were taken over by HP and went downhill in my opinion, Packard bell are also out there, there are toshibas also, I find the latter quiet plastic and will give issues with the touch pads, not to mention the other hardware issues.

Your little pinky, I worked for the company you speak of, believe me, your only paying for the brand name, not great with quality of hardware and I will not mention other issues.

I was never a lover of Dell machines, mainly because they are put together by monkeys who have no clue about systems but I gotta hand it to Michael Dell for his under the counter dealings with intel, he gives great hardware for the money, all you got to do is strip it down, rebuild and stick a proper operating system on it ( all vendors modify the OS to suit the hardware). lol

For a high end system that will allow you to multitask and it's cheap in price try an inspiron 1564 which is running the new intel i3 core CPU which runs 52% faster than the dual core.

If it is purely for the badge that is stuck to it, vaio have a new one on the market running the i3 core with 6 gb of ram with a 320gb HDD, money down the drain if you ask me.

Another example of rip-off Britain!

Found it advertized for $399 = £241.

UK price - £479 = $732

How on earth can this be justified?

Added: My bad. I just discovered there are several versions of this model. The one WOF described is top of the Inspiron 1564 range.

I actually found one for a customer on www.pixmania.ie cheaper than on the Dell site, it comes in from France at €589 which is around £500......Irish prices are even worse than UK, but with our governmentwe are use to going to the shops with our pants around our ankles (if you know what I mean lol)

Brilliant system though.

Dell Studio 1555. If someone doesn't agree please mention another brand name to offer HD screen, three years warranty and OS of your choice for this price.
By the way you need a computer choose a computer company not entertaining like sony.

Although Sony are entertainment, they jumped on board the computer side of things maybe 15 years ago.

I teched on their laptops/desktops/handhelds/aibo/MS/TVTV etc.........they have some good systems but it's the badge you are paying for and not the hardware.......I love ASUS systems and most of all the G5 apple is one mean mother although not a laptop.

For techies komplett is a cool place to buy parts if you want to custom build.

I grew up with Macintosh computers, but switched to PC's in the mid 90's, mostly due to the extensive software choices offered.
I just got a Macbook Pro last week, and I feel like I'm home again. It's the smaller screen and weighs about 6 lbs. I know it's expensive, but I'm going to take a chance and see how long it lasts me.

Editing to add, if money's no object, as you've already afforded yourself the more expensive on the PC side, why not look into a Macbook?

1. I wont buy Apple.

2. Definitely not going to buy Dell either.

3. I would use one of those trays, but like I said, I have to carry my laptop around places, so that is kind of inconvenience.

Right now I'm basically looking at Acer, Toshiba, and HP. No "minis". I need an internal drive, for sure, and I usually have music playing in the background, youtube open in one of the windows, another window is email, and then several programs for editing stuff. So I need something that won't freeze up and can handle it all.

When I skype with Jaquie_Farmer, I have to have the cooling pad on or else my computer will shut down within fifteen-twenty minutes. So I need something that won't do that :)

Thanks for all the recommendations everyone. I'll keep looking!

i use a HP dv9000 series, its been a good laptop, its huge with 17 in screen, but i bought it to use for work, graphic stuff, but ended up just using it mostly for play, do have it linked to tv's, projector so i can watch all my movies on my theater........tigerdirect.com has some good buys and they are a good company to compare prices and buy from, i've bought alot of parts from them, for building pc's.........i got the HP straight from the company.....right now, u might want to limp that one along till the 4 cores come down in price, being the 6 cores are out, but its really about need vs. preferrence.......

I converted to Mac in 1999 and never looked back. I actually own 3 Mac Pro laptops. One is actually a 15" G4 that I bought in 2005 and it has never given me an ounce of trouble. Then I got my wife a 17" Pro about 2 years ago. And I just got a new 15"Pro laptop about 3 weeks ago for my work office.

Thanks y'all. I'm probably going to go with a Toshiba.

The little acer netbook they were talking about is a great little machine but i bought one for my carer at christmas and his hard drive packed up last week, its under warrenty so its ok but i hope its not a common fault cause i got my bro one just a month ago.
Here's the deal I'm the best there is. Plain and simple. I wake up in the morning and I piss excellence.

I have an MSI Wind 12. It's slightly bigger than most netbooks and has a 12 inch screen. I've used MSI motherboards for a couple of years and rarely had a problem with them, but most people shun them because they've only just started making the whole machines and no one recognizes the name like Dell or HP.

I had an Asus before my MSI now, and it was AWESOME for the time period. I beat the crap out of it in college and it still lives!

What size of machine are you looking for, and is there anything in particular you want to do with it? Gaming, burning DVDs, writing, etc? Screen size preference?
