Hey Jordan!
I am from Columbia Missouri, well actually I am from the Detroit Metro area but I now reside in Columbia Missouri! Which is a pretty good-sized city in and I am sure there are quite a few Quads and Paras which I run into now and then but there really is it any type of support group or anything that connects us to one another!
I have a C6 and had my accident in October of 2001, fortunately I am married now and lived a pretty fulfilling life! Unfortunately it took me almost 4 years to kick myself in the but to work towards getting independent and quit feeling sorry for myself and to realize that life was still the most wonderful thing to have and that it is truly a gift!
I have recently started going back to the physical rehab center I ended up at when I first was injured, so that I could show the people who have just gone through the most terrifying change that a person can possibly go through that life can be fulfilling and that their independence can still be reclaimed! But the advice that I give to people early in their injuries is to build up their strength and work on their balance as hard as they possibly can, because in the last year and mostly to the last six months I have discovered that I am able to dress myself transfer in and out of my wheelchair without the assistance of any one, I have discovered that I am completely independent.
And with being able to take care of myself is like a turbo boost to my self-esteem (such a great feeling that I really can't explain it). It sounds like a lot of guys have an advantage over me, I was 34 when I had my injury and it sounds like most of you guys were not even 20 when you guys had your injury. You guys have an age advantage which means you can build and sculpt your young muscles to adapt to your level of injury so you can conquer and overcome the roadblocks and barriers that you face and will face in your everyday life.
I feel that every time I conquer and overcome something physical I reap the rewards mentally and emotionally which builds up attitude self-esteem and character!
I believe that we can learn tricks and different methods that have to do certain things in her newfound lifestyle but to actually conquering them ourselves and our own way is what builds of our character!
I hope that I have been some help to you and if you have any other questions about anything post it or e-mail me through this site and I'm sure there are a lot of other people on this site that have valuable information to pass along!
I wish you the very best,
Smoothcruz
