ive read back over the replys and it seems taht us quads either sit all day or go to schol while paras who have more movement and mobilty work. Does that seem rite?

Dan (yped by Norma)
I'd say that's right for my case. I do sit around for most of the day but I am back in college. At least for now anyways. I will soon be receiving my FES stim bike, so my studies would most likely take away time from this, as it already has a physical therapy. I really want that degree, but also really want to walk or at least gain back as much as I can. I'm thinking I might put school back off for little while and refocus back on my body.

i think we all want to get back as much as we can. im a c4/5 complete so i dont expect much. what is a FES stim bike and i dont understand what youre level of CSI is at.

Hello Dan and Norma!

What questions do you have regarding my SCI level?

Here is a video regarding what the FES stim bike is and what it can do for you. Most insurance companies will not pay for them. We just had to cut a check to pay for one which was over $20,000. I can only afford this because of my fundraisers and generous donations since my accident.

My level of SCI means that the level of injury was at the C3-C4 vertebrae. I'm considered an incomplete because it didn't sever my spinal cord. ASIA C has to do with what kind of function I have now since my accident. You can find this chart explaining what the different levels mean on this web site. If you can't locate it, just search for it on the Internet. An FES stim bike is something
If you don't try, you fail.

Hi Dan,

After my SCI in 78, finishing college, I started part-time work (software design/programming) in the mid 80s, late 80s thru early 90s worked at Hughes Aircraft Company as an analyst/programmer and then moved on to the world of fastfood, working again as an analyst/programmer but also a network administrator at Del Taco's corporate headquarters...I never did get to ask a customer if they wanted fries with their order

After getting my fill of fastfood :) my next job (96) was as a working manager of a software development group and then transitioned into a chief systems architect's role in 2000 and was laid off (with my entire division...so much fun) in 2003; shortly after my father died :(

Took a few months off (was given a nice severance pkg) and began independent contractor work for the next 4 yrs. Developed some major health issues, landed in hospital in late March of 08...

As of late, I just started rollin again after over two years of healing a half dozen bedsores. I'm currently on disability (SSDI), looking to get my strength back, my head around the current job market and new skills I might need to be successful again, and will eventually get back to more independent contracting or full-time work...given someone will still hire this old, graying propeller head :)

Regards,

Jerry B)

Hi, Jerry.

its so grate that you were able to get youre education that you could use after youre SCI. I was a roofer what means manuel labor so thats out for me. ive wondered about colege but with all my other costs i dont think it can be. fortanatly i have disability and insurance from my old job and 2 sets of parents that help Norma and i so income from a job isnt all that needed. after reading all the replys i think that only a few quads can really wourk at a real job. i now how hard it would be for me just to get to a job in my wheelcahir. i wish i could be cause it gets bored siting arond all day.

Thanks.

Jerry,

My case is very similar to yours. This year I was laid off after 23 years of work. My employer acquired another manufacturing site which was unaccessible and wanted one system admin for both sites. After 2005 I got some PHP/MySQL/JavaScript experience but not enough to compete with young lions for a full time job. I see my future as a freelancer in small website development. Feeling the burden of my 56 years I don't want to be involved in serious projects - meeting deadlines, working long hours ... you know. First of all I must take care of my health and try to be happy with what I have.
Sorry for loosing your father, my dad died 2005...

Wish you all the best
Rudy.

I am a t7 complete. I worked in the oil field before my injury so there was no going back to my old job. I went back to school and am now a mechanical designer. I have been with the same company for 15 years. It was a work accident so Workers comp takes care of my medical and wheel chair needs so that helps alot.

T5 incomplete here. I was 13 when I was initially injured and went back to school after about a year. After high school I went to college for programming, working part time (20 hours) as a computer tech. Graduated - hated programming, so I went back to school for Game Writing for another year full time. The university was terrible, so I transferred and finished my BA for Game Art and Design over the next 3 years. I worked full or part time during my entire college years. College bills = el sucko on the wallet.

Currently working 40-50 hour weeks as a computer technician/business owner/book keeper. I met my husband in that terrible university (only good thing that came out of it) and we started a computer business. I work 10-20 hours a week on top of that as a game artist and 3d object modeler for a small gaming studio.
3 doctors diagnosed me with hysterical paralysis (weee!), 1 diagnosed an incomplete T7, another T2 and the last (and most accurate) T5. Trampolines are BAD. Sleep is unpredictable. And never kiss strangers. Life has moved on.
