Do you have legal expenses insurace with your house contents insurance? If so best bet might be to start there. Are (were) you a member of a trade union - they might help.

Have you threatened insurance company with ombudsman?

Can't be any more help than that I'm afraid.

Hi jane, i've joined this forum just to reply to you really. I also live near Leicester and my critical insurance policy has refused to pay out. I took my complaint to the Financial Ombudsmn. Unfortunately, after the ombudsman looked at the policy (which took 4 months, as they have to give the company involved 8 weeks to reply to any complaint before it even goes to a judicator), I was advised that my particular policy was not under their juristriction and they could do nothing to help me. I have found that certain 'critical insurance policies' taken out prior to 24 Jan 2004 are not regulated I've since been on line and looked through google for solicitors in this field and have found 'Alexander Harris'. I hope they can be of use to you - and good luck .
